Top Performances or Scenes (In No Particular Order)
Katherine Waterston – State Like Sleep
While the film itself is a bit forgettable, Waterston does what many a great actor tries and lifts the film to reach the standards you’d expect of her and makes it far more appealing than it would be without her.
Kevin Hart – The Upside
Rather than jump straight into drama, and thus alienating his fan base, and maybe just trying to charm critics, Hart continues to ease his way in and try to balance out bringing his comedic charm while taking on rules which challenge him as an actor.
Eric (Ncuti Gatwa) and Eric’s Dad (Deobia Oparei) – Sex Education: Season 1/ Episode 7
For most of the season, we’re led to believe that Eric’s Dad (his actual name is unknown) is stereotypically homophobic. However, in a heart to heart with his son, he reveals the truth behind his hesitation on Eric being authentically himself. Read more in the recap linked below.
Sex Education: Season 1/ Episode 7 – Recap/ Review (with Spoilers)
Margaret Qualley – IO
In a movie about a dystopian future, we’re used to seeing female leads in the ilk of many a YA novel adaptation. Qualley is given a different narrative in which she isn’t some bright-eyed girl who lost everything, is paired with some guy, and now is fighting for the universe. This film is far more quiet and with a small cast. One that, arguably, she didn’t need much of the support of for similar to other isolation movies like Gravity and I Am Legend, you can see Qualley commanding the movie successfully all on her own.
