Review and Commentary
Highlight(s)
Navigating Hetero-Normativity [85/100]
Because gender and sexuality are such complicated subjects, the exploration of them, beyond experts and those seeking to educate, can feel nil. Case in point, Jake’s situation. He clearly likes, even loves Max, as they are moving in together. But I think the complication is, while Max may have a gender neurtral name and call themselves non-binary, they could still be identified as a woman because of their breast.
Removing that complicates Jake’s shield. He is an ally, not a member of the LGBT+. He’s understanding, but likes some degree of being removed. It’s all very interesting, and you can tell with Max; she finds the hypocrisy cute, at first. Even looking at how Jake handles a popsicle seems to tickle Max since it is homoerotic.
But there comes the complication: Jake is unyielding regarding his sexuality. There doesn’t seem to be the same fluidity that Max has. Which leaves Max in this very weird place. How much, if at all, does Jake love them? Is it just how they appear to society or who they say they are, who they live as? The exploration creates an intriguing dynamic that doesn’t cover the whole conversation but does at least get it started.
Overall
Our Rating (85/100): Positive (Worth Seeing) – Recommended
She’s Non-Binary is complicated and begins the conversation. One which, through Jake, shows the challenging relationship between gender and sexuality. Never mind the concept of allyship and how performative that can be.
