Review and Commentary
Highlight(s)
Representation Matters Both Ways [82/100]
While the majority of the film focuses on the pressure Skyler is under to get a job to help pay for his tuition, there is one special moment worth noting. It is the reminder of not only what got Skyler started but what will lead to the next generation.
To me, that moment fuels you wanting to see Skyler succeed more than anything. Just this little kid, likely not even ten, seeing Skyler, and there being a moment when they seem to recognize each other and what they could mean to one another. For while Skyler is just a student now, eventually he’ll be on stage and could be the name this child mentions for who inspired them to continue despite mental, emotional, physical, or financial hardships.
Which, expanding beyond Skyler’s story, reminds you that someone is always watching, and beyond your supervisor/boss, it is also people on their way up who could surpass you, but still may never forget you.
Overall
Our Rating (82/100): Positive (Worth Seeing)
Alongside showing the work that comes with becoming a ballet dancer, Fly is a reminder of the work yet to come. From being inspired to an inspiration, it reminds you of the cycle that crafts the next generation and why you can never let a dream die.
