Furious: Season 1 Episode 7 – Recap and Review

As Alice seeks to redeem herself, more is revealed about Jay Easton, which leaves you to think more than ever – he doesn’t deserve to die in his own bed.

In the aftermath of Catherine shooting Marshall, he is alive! However, Nora admonishes Alice regarding focusing on Marshall’s life over apprehending Catherine. But whether or not this is reverse psychology is hard to say. What is clear, though, is that being in a live-or-die situation does change things for Alice, especially in relation to Danny.

As before, when she needed a shower and he stayed with her, he does as she recovers from basically overdosing on fentanyl and living to talk about it. He watches over her, and in the morning, there is a push for overdue conversations. Alice wants to focus on the invite to the Jersey Shore, their relationship, and how it could progress. Danny? He wants to talk about the video, and unfortunately, even though Alice and Jay weren’t doing anything, seeing her like that may have killed his romantic and/or sexual feelings for Alice.

This is heartbreaking for Alice, but with him saying that, it does make it so she has the ability to just focus on work and have some edge. Unfortunately, her sister, Amy, ends up collateral damage, but considering Ed is still trying to sabotage the case, a pissed-off Alice is just what it needs. But, while pissed off, or better said, focused, Alice isn’t foolish. So, while Nora is being punished by Ed, and her drinking being used against her, Alice calls her in to start navigating where “Big Man” is, maybe also Elena.

With ease, they find the motel we saw earlier in the season, and Big Man goes down quick. Also, to much surprise, Catherine is found, but Alice doesn’t take her in. Rather, she plants the seed for Catherine to head to Connecticut to go after Jay Easton. Someone who, with the help of Emma, just did something to a young girl.

But, not to be outdone, while Alice is finding Catherine, wrecking Elena’s world by revealing Isabel is her mother, not her sister, Danny finds out Isabel might be Jay Easton’s daughter. Vastly altering the narrative.

Other Noteworthy Information

Amy in Furious Season 1 Episode 7
  • Mommie Dearest: It isn’t clear who got Alice pregnant at 14, or how she ended up a video in Jay Easton’s possession. However, we do learn what led to her leaning on Marshall’s mom. Alice got pregnant at 14; her mom, who had an affair with Amy’s father and married him, wanted nothing to do with her. So, with her father kicking her out and her mom abandoning her, that is how she ended up struggling, and that is the source of her being estranged from Amy.
  • The Enabler: It seems Emma, maybe through Big Man, maybe someone else, gets young girls for her father. It isn’t what he does with them, or what he even can do considering his health, but Emma helps feed his twisted needs. However, what she doesn’t tolerate is there being recordings. Which makes her upset when she discovers at least a dozen hard drives of material, despite getting rid of all evidence, likely around the time Caleb was killed.

Review and Commentary

Highlights

Alice’s Dark Side [85/100]

Alice’s cruelty is, as a viewer, part of what makes her likable. Whether it was demolishing her relationship, or what little of it existed, with her half-sister Amy, or decimating Elena’s world by revealing her sister is her mom, her cruelty is lowkey entertaining. Granted, it is all rooted in her own hurt, maybe her need to succeed, and her desire to control a situation. But there is something about a lead who can both be someone cruel, vicious, callous, and unlikable, yet someone you can love and adore.

Note: I wouldn’t say she has carte blanche and could kill Danny or Nora and still be someone you want to see win rather than meet her demise. However, I think Furious is one of the best examples of showing how to utilize an actress like Emmy Rossum, who can be very charming, and push that to see how far it can go.

Jay Takes The Reins As The Season’s Villain [84/100]

Ed is a minion. A sniveling minion who has just enough power to be formidable, but as shown by how Danny treats him, his power is limited. Nora might have also succumbed to him, to a point, but let’s not forget for a moment that in the last episode, she removed Ed’s power, and he got lucky.

Which is why we’re glad Jay is getting to be a bit more prominent than he was before. He talked down to his daughter, shows he is still doing something to young girls – it isn’t clear what, and that he is shielded and gloating regarding the idea he is untouchable. That is the kind of villain the show needs and with Catherine outside his door, it seems he might be meeting his maker soon.

With just enough time, in the finale, to explain how he is Isabel’s father.

Understanding It Takes A System To Prop Up A Monster [84.5/100]

Emma in Furious Season 1 Episode 7

So, we have Ed handling things on a federal level, keeping Jay’s name out of any investigation. We have Hal, Jay’s former lawyer, litigating any of the things Ed couldn’t shut down or reach don’t reach the feds. Together, they were acting as a major one-two punch. Then you have Emma, maybe Caleb at one time, procuring girls for Jay, and in Caleb’s case, taking part and joining his father.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is how you maintain systems. People look the other way, focus on how they can or will benefit, and have it in them to sacrifice the vulnerable for their comfort, pleasure, or fun. All while some, like Hal, may try to justify what they do because it is their job, maybe pretend that, because they are collecting evidence, they could become the good guy, or have the intention to someday.

Yet, someday is far off and the list of victims grows longer and longer. Making even the possibility of being an anti-hero unlikely, for the truth is, for people like Hal, there are no good guys or bad guys. There is just who is buying what they are selling, and who is the highest bidder?

Danny’s Struggles With Loving Alice [79/100]

I will forever be in the “Alice and Danny don’t need to be together” club. Mainly due to feeling that the brother and sister dynamic gives us something of more value than them crushing on one another. Don’t get me wrong, her having puppy eyes towards Danny after he spent the night watching over her was cute. It also was a touch heartbreaking as she realized the likelihood of them ever being together was slim.

But it is in exploring Danny’s feelings regarding what he saw, what he increasingly is being told, and what he sees Alice doing that does make their likely inevitable relationship interesting. He is seeing the worst of her in more ways than one. Whether it be through her being exploited or her taking advantage of situations.

This leads to the type of storyline which can break the mold of the male and female lead being destined because of convenience. If they end up together, it is going to be a warts-and-all type of relationship. It isn’t going to just be because they think the other person is hot, they’ve been fairly consistent, or anything superficial.

Danny knows Alice has a dark side as a cop/FBI agent, in terms of her personal life, and secrets that may haunt her upbringing. Increasingly, he isn’t getting this ideal version of her. He is seeing her as a complete person, and while I may not like these two together, I can appreciate their relationship if it is less than ideal and he truly loves her as opposed to being too afraid or too lazy to find someone else.

Marshall’s Mom in Furious Season 1 Episode 7

Furious, as it comes upon its final episode, seems like it may end on a high note. But with every reveal, there needs to be some kind of logical answer. The show has given us many, from Isabel being Jay’s daughter to everything that has happened to Alice. So let’s hope, as the season comes to an end, these reveals hold weight and show Furious isn’t all about hype.
