Furious: Season 1 Episode 6 – Recap and Review

Alice and Catherine come face to face, and increasingly, we’re left to wonder if the two aren’t so different.

As Alden gives Frank and Danny the runaround, Alice is trying to turn Catherine, which won’t be easy. Catherine is in her element at the shelter, where she used to work, and people know her. Unfortunately, some know Alice too, and that leads to her cover being blown.

Which, originally, wasn’t the worst thing. Nora and Alice spoke, there were cops all around the shelter, and they were due to move in. However, Nora overplayed her hand regarding the operation and her handling of Ed, so Ed removed all of the agents Nora set up, leaving Alice alone.

Now, Alice might be a trained agent, but Catherine is someone who is used to being cornered and threatened, and easily gets her with a dose of fentanyl. Lucky for Alice, the report built up before she was exposed is enough to keep Catherine from using Alice’s gun and shooting her. But once it becomes clear no one is coming, Catherine makes a run for it.

Alice goes after her, and Marshall, who stalked her in order to confront her, accosts her. Catherine sees this and shoots him. For, you see, Alice, while she may embellish, has a little bit of truth in all her stories, and Catherine, a talented liar herself, knew Alice’s stories about abuse and fear of showers were real. So, shooting Marshall was easy. However, Alice staying with Marshall may come as a mild surprise.

But, showing the day wasn’t a total loss, while Alden played games with Frank, Danny genuinely won him over. This ends up being a boon for while Ed was trying to cover up for Jay, who seemingly made his career, and make sure Hal’s laptop was wiped, Alden was sitting on a backup that he had Danny take. Now, unfortunately, this backup isn’t something Nora was aware of to keep Ed in check, but Danny does look through it, and of the many folders filled with who knows what, the name “Alice” pops up.

Leaving us to wonder, was our Alice one of Jay’s victims?

Review and Commentary

Highlights

Alden [84/100]

Is Alden’s loyalty to Catherine worth raising an eyebrow about? Yes. Especially since the idea is pushed that Catherine may have killed his mom, for reasons not fully known. However, it’s difficult not to appreciate that he is one of the few people Catherine can rely on and that she has, for the most part, treated him kindly.

Will she ever remove the need to question if she is using him? No. However, I think there is such a push for this to be mutually beneficial that even if she is using him, you have to appreciate she wants him to get something out of it. Be it companionship, maybe to receive what seems like genuine affection, or maybe to see something live he has only seen on the internet?

We’re not judging.

When it Seemed Like Nora Has Ed’s Card [85/100]

Nora saying Ed used to call her DOH (DH) for diversity hire explains all the animosity from the previous episode. It also made her seemingly catching him by the foot and being ready to potentially expose him so damn wonderful. Sadly, he learned he wasn’t in any danger and undid all of Nora’s efforts, leaving Alice to be collateral damage, but there was that moment there worth being excited.

Do We Really Know Alice At All? [83/100]

For the most part, I feel like Alice is very conservative with giving the audience, or other people, information about herself. Now, she does reveal things when talking to people to get them on her side, but with the way Danny speaks, it is hard to say if she is lying or he is just consistently surprised by how much he doesn’t know.

But there is something fun about this. It is never clear where the line is, what’s the truth, and even for those who know her, like Marshall’s mom, can we trust them? Could she have lied to them for survival?

A lot of thought is put into what happened to Catherine, but with this apparently not being a mini-series, but meant to have multiple seasons, maybe we should really be asking what happened to Alice and who can be relied on for the truth?

On The Fence

Alice Being One of Jay’s Victims [74/100]

I want to pretend that, because Alice isn’t the most unique name, what Danny saw wasn’t the Alice we know but simply a girl named Alice. It would be too much for Alice to be one of Jay’s victims, in my mind.

Yes, we’re told she got kicked out, might have been pregnant, and times were rough at one time. However, considering the profile of Jay’s victims thus far, I find myself questioning how they would fit Alice into that narrative. Never mind how much that would alter everything we may know about her.   

Ed As Lead Villain [73/100]

Every story needs a villain, and with Jay dying and seldom seen, it seems Ed is taking on that role. But, it would be one thing if Ed was just someone who changed his act because he wants to be promoted, and strayed away from nicknaming non-white hires. Him owing his current position and success to Jay, taking orders, and putting the lead in danger?

I think it speaks to the larger issue of what the tone this show wishes to have is. It’s not silly or comedic; it seems to want to be rooted in realism, but Ed dismantling an operation to capture a serial killer to protect one person, while sacrificing an agent, feels off. Granted, it was to regain the power Nora tried to take from him, maybe show he is still the bastard he always was. Yet, even with that in mind, again, there is the question, with this not being a mini-series, of how this show will handle characters like Ed, if not villains, long term.

Because increasingly there is a certain level of convenience and manufacturing of connections which pushes the idea it’s less about what’s right for the story, and more about how to accommodate such limitations as the episode count. If not, create a means to create shock.

Overall

Our Overall Rating [79/100]

As we come to the tail end of the first season of Furious, there is a need to question how or if it will end the Catherine case. On top of that, with each reveal regarding Alice and those who have allowed Jay to stay out of jail, how will it resolve everything it has built up without disappointing or leaving a perplexing answer to every question viewers may have had?
