For nearly three days, Nanahoshi is unresponsive, and everyone is worried. But, thankfully, Perugius’ team is able to come up with a diagnosis: Dryne Syndrome. It seems to be a defunct disease from the time when humans didn’t have much, if any, mana. If not the ability to process it as they do now.
But, with Nanahoshi being from Japan, and not reincarnated like Rudy, she didn’t get the modern immune system (?) that would keep her from being sick. Thing is though, outside of getting sick this one time, she has been a borderline vampire. Her hair doesn’t grow; her nails don’t grow; she doesn’t get her period. She is basically stuck at the same age she was when she was teleported.
Her life has effectively been put on pause for the last eight years, and the first thing to happen to show she isn’t immortal or invincible is getting a deadly diagnosis. It’s infuriating, and while having everyone, including Rudy, there for her is sweet, Rudy is a reminder of all she doesn’t have. She outright says she is envious of him for all he has that she doesn’t.

This creates a form of guilt, perhaps greater than Sylphie’s for her casting a spell which preceding Nanahoshi coughing up blood. For when you look at it, Rudy has not only gained a great life, but has largely moved on from the one he had in Japan. He doesn’t talk or speak about his past siblings, his parents, and the only time his old life is acknowledged is when Man-God or Nanahoshi remind him that this isn’t his original world.
And it seems, because of that, he wants to find a cure for Nanahoshi. But, with it being unknown what led to humanity being able to process mana better, get some form of an immunity, or what have you, Rudy comes to realize he will have to travel far to get an answer, so the idea is going to the Demon Continent. Why? Well, with Perugius only willing to lend his help to a point, the idea is that maybe Kishirika may have the answer.
Of course, finding her, originally, seemed like it would be a challenge. However, on the first day she is stumbled upon, by Cliff of all people, and with him feeding her, he is granted a wish. Mind you, he may need to make it quick for King Atofe, Badigadi’s sister, has wanted posters up for Kishirika, and you know she tends to be boisterious when fed.

Highlights
A Change Of Scenery [82/100]

While Rikarisu and the Demon Continent aren’t new to the show, we haven’t been there in more than a season, and anytime this season takes us away from Rudy’s home is an opportunity to shake things up. For I don’t think it would be wrong to say that this season, while it does get emotional, has been a touch stale. Still watchable, but not at the levels of season 1 or season 2.
So, with Perugius and his fortress being a let-down, there is hope that familiar faces and places may compensate for that in upcoming episodes. Alongside meeting Bidigadi’s sister, and maybe finding out where he has been and what he has been up to.
Nanahoshi’s Envy Of Rudy [84/100]
Most of this season has been dedicated to Rudy’s home life. We’ve seen how his marriages work, his relationships with his sisters, his mom, extended family in Lilila, and his friends. All of which he has made clear he is grateful for, but Nanahoshi reminded us that this is a redo for Rudy.
With that in mind, it forces you to remember that he had siblings and parents, and he never talks about them, doesn’t seem to think about them, and has pretty much treated his death in a past life as closing the chapter. Meanwhile, Nanahoshi is the same girl she was before and didn’t get the benefit, if you want to call it that, of being reincarnated.
In many ways, it felt like a necessary reminder of how privileged Rudy is. Not everyone has family, a love life, or enough money to live comfortably. Never mind a community of which they are an essential, if not a central, figure. I would even add in that part of Rudy’s privilege is how insulated he is from the harsher realities of the world. This episode doesn’t touch on this, but it does feel like the show really wants to make clear how much Rudy has learned his lesson compared to how he lived during his first life. While making it clear, his life is far from the norm.
Overall
Our Overall Rating [83/100]

I wouldn’t say the hype I’ve had for two seasons has returned, but I do feel that, as we become accustomed to what the show wants to offer vs. what it has offered, we’re learning to enjoy what we’re given. Be it the sense of community Rudy has, the slice of life aspects, or the comfort in believing that, by the end of the episode, things will probably be alright.
