Marshall deciding he needed to report Alice having a gun out in public is really messing with her ability to freely speak to Nora. Someone who, despite her actions in the last episode, does want the 2012 Jane Doe case solved, but she also has to deal with Ed, who wants to keep this all hush-hush. So, two things are done. Alice sets up Marshall so he could get arrested for drinking and likely attempting to drive. Following that, Nora encourages Danny to put Catherine’s picture out there to make it so Ed can’t keep this as quiet as he wants.
All this chaos allows Alice to dig into Isabel, who Ed wants to not be the focus of the investigation. But while she is tracing whether Isabel gave up her baby at a Safe Surrender Box, and that maybe that was the bracelet on her arm, Catherine is looking for answers.
Hal has to know more than he lets on. He has, for who knows how long, enabled Jay to do as he pleases and keep him from ever facing prosecution. In fact, Hal has even kept evidence, financial records, pictures, even videos, in case Jay ever tried to screw him over – and he tells Catherine about this. Now, being that Catherine has some medical skills and social intelligence, but isn’t big on computers, she finds herself asking Alden for help, and he is the one who discovers the photos and videos.
This isn’t ideal, as he keeps finding stuff which is ruining the fantasy they live in. That she is a nice nurse, who likes him, loves him, and would not only be his girlfriend, but his wife. And unfortunately, by the end of the episode, he learns Catherine’s real name and sees her stab Hal in the eye and inject him with fentanyl.
But he isn’t the only one to see the real her. Alice ends the episode, while looking into the Safe Surrender Box, in the same room as Catherine. As for why she is there? Who knows. But Alden did try to buy her time and did help her escape Danny and Frank. However, whether Alice will let her escape is anyone’s guess.
New Characters in Episode 5
Ed (Danny McCarthy)

- Character Summary: Ed is Nora’s superior, former direct supervisor, who seemingly is uncomfortable with the Jane Doe case that is Isabel, but is ready for the agency to get a win by taking down Catherine. He is also someone heading a mental health initiative at the bureau, despite being someone who formerly was the reason those like Nora gained mental health issues.
Review and Commentary
Highlights
Alice Screwing Over Marshall [85/100]
I love a good comeuppance. Granted, getting a man drunk, who used to harm you when he got drunk, is not a smart decision – by any means. However, Marshall is also someone who has shown himself to be two-faced. He claims to love Alice, speaks it whenever he can, but while he isn’t physically harming her, he is mentally and emotionally, and impeding her career advancement in retaliation for what she said that has slowed down his.
So her getting him drunk and in trouble, while not something we can condone, I respect it as a means of her fixing the power imbalance. Since, clearly, he is trying to get her to recant her statement, and she is trying to hold him to what he did by almost any means necessary.
Alden’s Complicated Relationship With Catherine [84/100]
Two things can be true at once. Catherine could be using Alden, and she could also love him at the same time. She notes she doesn’t want Alden to be alone, so there is some form of empathy for him. It could be pity, but it could also be genuine affection because he decides to believe her lie and see her as she wants to be seen.
In another life, maybe Catherine would have been a home health aide, some form of nurse, and not have on her mind all this trauma? Maybe dating could be normal for her and Alden would be someone she could ease into falling in love with, rather than see it as an opportunity for a stable home base and a steady supply of the drugs she needs to kill people?
And I think, as Alden learns the truth, it doesn’t break the love and affection but creates a mutual empathy, maybe even pity. He sees, like him, she doesn’t have anyone; there isn’t necessarily a community or safety net. That, if things really got bad, there is no one in her corner. So, he wants to be there and maybe prove to her, as she does for him, that she is lovable despite what the world, or voice in her head, may think.
Alice’s Hidden Struggles [82/100]

Every episode, it feels like we learn more and more about Alice and why she wants to be on Nora’s team. It’s not because she loves children and wants to protect them, or because she wants to become an advocate for other women. At times, it seems personal, like it is less about taking on or down the victim as it is getting to the perpetrator, and it makes you wonder, as more of her childhood is revealed, if that time period when she ran away holds stories we can’t fathom.
Never Trust A Lawyer [83/100]
Have you ever thought about how much power your lawyer has? Yes, they defend you, clean up your mess, and there is the assumption of attorney-client privilege. But they seemingly can also create a false sense of confidence. Jay and his family have trusted Hal with their secrets, and he has been collecting evidence on the assumption a betrayal would be coming down the line.
Which has to make you wonder: what type of betrayal was he expecting, and on his laptop, what type of evidence is on there? Is it of Jay with the girls, maybe his son or associates? Also, how did he get this footage?
You can see why Catherine targeted him, considering he has known of Jay’s crimes and has collected evidence, and never turned it in. Leaving you to realize how many lawyers are probably as guilty as their clients, even if their job is just making sure a trial is fair.
Overall
Our Overall Rating [83/100]
As we begin to see more good in Catherine and the extent Alice will go, there is more and more a push to see them as two sides of the same coin. Which leaves you to wonder: as they come closer and closer to meeting, will things flip and viewers be left realizing, between them, there is no good or evil? Just two women willing to do whatever it takes for their brand of justice.
