As Rudy is haunted by almost being killed, if not put into servitude, in the last episode, an old, often unwelcome face appears to him in a dream.

After the events of the last episode, Rudy has a bit of PTSD. King Atofe was his toughest challenge since Orsted, and worse than her wanting to kill him, she wanted to control him. This is part of the reason Rudy decides to start writing in a diary. While Perugius has become a friend, Rudy has two wives, and surely Lilia could be a listening ear; Rudy isn’t that type of guy. He’s not big into sharing his feelings, especially negative ones.

Hence why, when Perugius offers him a favor for giving him a chance to get vengeance against King Atofe, of all the things he could ask for, he asks for combat techniques. Pushing the idea that Rudy still may not understand that he can lean on people. Granted, his team of four nearly lost to King Atofe, but even King Atofe noted they have been bested before.

The effect King Atofe has had on Rudy aside, Man-God pops up! As always, it is an uneasy conversation, since Man-God always has Rudy appear in his former state. But Rudy enters the conversation in a less agitated state than usual. In fact, even when it is all over, while Rudy is saddened to hear that if he hadn’t gone to Begaritt, where Zenith was being held, Paul would have been alive, it seems he is willing to give Man-God the benefit of the doubt.

This leads to Man-God asking for a simple favor: Rudy going into his basement. But before Rudy can do that, a future version of him stops that from happening – with the reveal that Man-God was trying to trick Rudy. But why, and what would have happened if Rudy went into the basement, doesn’t get revealed in this episode.

  • Eyes of Discernment: Off-screen, Emperor Kishrika gives Cliff the Eyes of Discernment, which shows him information about everything he sees, and it’s a bit discombobulating for Cliff right now.
  • Nanahoshi Update: With having Sokas Grass, she is feeling better, but this isn’t a cure – Nanahoshi will get sick again as long as she remains in this world
  • Age: Rudy is currently 18
  • The Kinder Side of Perugius: If Aerial can align her definition of a King with how Perugius does, he says he will lend his aid. He notes, though, that a friend of his, Gaunis Freean Asura, was a true king, and that’s despite him being cowardly, averse to battle, and ogling barmaids. Also, despite his hatred for demons, because he is indebted to Ruijerd, who came to his aid during the Laplace War, it seems Perugius will support Rudy’s goal of redeeming the Sperd race.
  • Battle Aura: According to Man-God, entities like King Atofe can use the mana in their body to boost their physical abilities. It’s a skill that can be built, but Rudy’s magic apparently ignores the aura, to the point that he could, in time, best Orsted.

The Long-Term Effects King Atofe May Have On Rudy [85/100]

What Rudy has long lacked is a challenge. He is one of the strongest people we’re aware of. He is relatively gifted in terms of his intelligence, and in his relationships? Everything is smooth. Sylphie has no issues with Roxy, and vice versa. His family is getting along, despite the origins of his sisters. It is all going rather easily.

Which is why you have to appreciate King Atofe shaking that up. It could be said that after the fight to save Zenith, Rudy getting a new hand, and learning King Class magic, things were going a bit too easy for him. So, a reminder that there is someone who presents a threat beyond Orsted might just be what Rudy needs to study harder, train harder, maybe even leave his increasingly complacent home life and adventure again.

For I think we’re coming to the point where Rudy increasingly will have to leave his bubble, rather than wait and hope no one tries to pop it.

Man-God – The Trickster God [84/100]

Consider Man-God the true sign we’re at a turning point of the show and a new chapter has begun. Yes, the last turning point (Turning Point 3) episode dealt with Nanahoshi bringing a watermelon from our world into their world – showing advanced, interdimensional teleportation. But Man-God is the one who truly presents us with a turning point, or rather a crossroad where Rudy’s upcoming decision could drastically alter his life and the show.

In the latest case, it was investigating whatever is in his basement. Now, because his future self pops up, we don’t learn what is down there. But, considering how safe Rudy has become in his own home and the surrounding area of Sharia, again, this felt like the kind of shake-up he, and the show, needed.

With that said, I hope as they unravel his older self time traveling, they don’t jump the shark.

On The Fence

Too Much Going On Off-Screen [76/100]

No adaptation, even if a series, is going to cover every last aspect presented in its source material. However, speeding through Perugius apparently telling Zanoba about the end of the Laplace War and speeding through Cliff getting the Eye of Discernment feels like we got robbed. Cliff getting the eye, less so, but not hearing from the being who ended the biggest war known to mankind?

To me, Perugius may have grown on us as a character, and even got to show off a bit in the last episode. But the thing that is his claim to fame still feels like a mystery that keeps getting these minor details added. Like, the fact that Ruijerd played some role in Perugius’ victory might be a footnote to historians, but because we know Ruijerd and miss him dearly, this feels like a big deal.

So we can only hope, eventually, the full story gets told.

Our Overall Rating [81/100]

From King Atofe shaking Rudy out of the stupor of bliss he was in, to Man-God setting Rudy up to face a real and imminent threat, we really enjoyed this episode. Yes, it omitted the one thing we genuinely want from Perugius, in terms of details on the Laplace war, but he’s lived for hundreds of years, so it isn’t like he is going anywhere.
