Movie Summary
After much in the way of trials and tribulations, the original crew seems to be in a good place. Well, at least when talking about Terry and Diane, Troy and Sheila, and generally Marcus and Angela. Mike is still a hot mess. Also, there is a new friend named Roselyn, who steps in for Pat in this movie.
Now, like friend groups, between their careers, marriages, and kids, coming together is a rare occasion. Which is why when Marcus and Angela’s daughter, Jasmine, has a wedding planned with Roselyn’s son, Wesley, it’s not just a celebration but a reunion. However, with so many secrets between the parents and next generation, champagne flutes may not be the only thing clashing.

- Character Summary: Marcus is Angela’s husband, father of two, who was a star athlete back in the day and a womanizer, which has long complicated his relationship with Angela.

Wesley (Everett Osborne)
- Character Summary: Wesley is an athlete who is poised to beat Marcus’ college records, thus causing tension between them. He is also Jasmine’s fiancé and has a complicated relationship with his mom, Roselyn.
Mike (Richard T. Jones)
- Character Summary: Mike is Sheila’s ex-husband, in some ways the male equivalent of Angela, but rather than being a truth-teller, he is more of an instigator.
Marcus Jr. (Da’Vinchi)
- Character Summary: Marcus Jr. is Marcus and Angela’s son, Jasmine’s brother, who has one of his father’s worst qualities in being a womanizer.

- Pat is not in the movie at all, but it is made clear early on that she won’t show up.
- You don’t necessarily need to have seen the first two movies to understand this one. Almost everyone’s backstory is recapped at some point in the movie. Including notable moments from the first film.
Review and Commentary
Highlight(s)
The Back-and-Forth Is Hilarious [83/100]
As with previous entries of the Why Did I Get Married franchise, Angela and Mike being in any scene means guaranteed laughter. Neither can hold their tongue; Mike loves to stir up drama, and Angela will call out anyone and everyone, especially if it is a man.
But they aren’t alone in making jokes. Most of the franchise regulars get jokes in, whether it is at Terry’s son’s expense, everyone cracking on Mike’s hair, or just general banter since they’ve known each other so long. All of which sometimes makes the drama feel less meant to be serious, and more to set up future jokes – for better or worse.
The Acknowledgment That The Behind-the-Scenes Work Can Create An Unhealthy Façade [82/100]
One of the main sources of drama in Why Did I Get Married Again? is the same as in previous films: people keeping secrets, trying to maintain appearances, and trying to keep the peace. For the married couples, they’ve been through affairs, drinking, abusive relationships, and more, and now, coming through on the other side, they try to maintain the appearance that things are better.
It’s clear, to varying degrees, however, they are not. Terry and Diane, alongside Marcus and Angela, are still dealing with a lack of trust after previous affairs. Sheila is aware of how her health may decline, Troy’s finances, and how that can affect their future. And on top of all this, there are the children who have their parents on a pedestal because they don’t know their journeys; they have just experienced the life they built at the final destination.
Which is why Roselyn’s storyline deserves a special note, because she is the only one amongst adults who isn’t married. She is divorced, tries to protect the image of her ex-husband, despite the type of man he is, and pays the price through her relationship with her son.
Wesley is rude to her, blames her for everything, and throughout the film, you watch as these personas the parents have crafted and tried to maintain unravel. Either through Mike pulling at the strings, or the parents realizing that, in their children idolizing them, they aren’t seeing their humanity, or gaining the tools they need to navigate the world.
Leaving you with your usual Tyler Perry movie-type monologues, which may not hit like they used to, but still have moments where they can be poignant.
On The Fence
A Lot Of The Younger Characters Aren’t Given The Development Needed To Stand Out Or Be Meaningful [73/100]
There are a lot of new characters introduced in Why Did I Get Married Again. Sheila has a son with Troy, Terry and Diane have two kids, Angela and Marcus have two, Roselyn brings one, and the movie has all of them waltz in like they were introduced as kids in previous movies. They weren’t. And what makes grasping who is who all the more difficult is that not all of them get a storyline.
Wesley and Jasmine do, because they are getting married, as does Marcus Jr., as it is explored that the apple didn’t fall too far from the tree, in terms of him being like his dad. As for the others? It’s easy to forget the name of Sheila and Troy’s son because he doesn’t get developed at all.
Terry and Diane’s two kids? Their son spends most of the movie being made fun of either to his face or catching strays as the franchise’s characters compare their children. Their daughter? At best, she is Jasmine’s best friend, and she gets her moment in the sun on the rare occasion, noting how her parents’ example set the bar high for potential relationships.
But, for the most part, the new additions aren’t presented as capable of taking the baton and carrying the franchise forward. They are simply the children of the original characters, and allow Perry to show a different side by depicting not just how everyone is as a husband or wife, but now how they come off as mothers, fathers, and co-parents.
Overall
Our Rating (79/100): Mixed (Divisive)
The main issue with Why Did I Get Married Again? Is that many of its characters seemingly were created for the benefit of those who have been around since the first movie. There doesn’t seem to be much of a desire to develop more than half of the kids as individuals and allow them to stand out in this movie, or in a way where you’d want to see their story continue.
Hence the mixed label. Why Did I Get Married Again? Gives you the laughter expected, the drama which is Tyler Perry’s signature, paired with lessons and monologues, but it feels bloated. Mainly due to far too many characters whose purpose is solely to add layers to their parents, while being written paper-thin.
