Furious: Season 1 Episode 8 [Finale] – Recap and Review

We finally learn what happened to Isabel and whether or not the first season will end with her getting justice – and whether Catherine may live to see it.

Ultimately, it seems Emma was the center of it all. We already knew, in recent times, she procured girls for her father, but it seems, even when Catherine was a teenager, she was doing the same. She created a welcoming environment for the girls, got them drugs, and when it comes to Isabel, while she may have roughly discarded the body, she didn’t kill her. Technically, Catherine played a role in that.

How? Well, by giving her a fatal dose of heroin. You see, Isabel was in immense pain after giving birth. It isn’t 100% clear what the complication was, but it is made clear that her pimp didn’t care about the pain at all. So, she was still sent to have sex with Jay and Catherine with Oliver, in another room. However, the amount of blood led Emma to be called in, who eventually got Catherine, while she pre-emptively called Hal because she knew what was coming.

Catherine remembers this all while having a gun to Emma’s head and forcing a confession out of her. But, despite what Emma confesses, and clearly destroying hard drives which could contain evidence, nothing seems to happen to her. In fact, to show how diabolical Emma is, she set her father up to be murdered! She gave him a healthy dose of morphine, and when first confronted by Catherine, she gives her a gun to kill Jay. She ends up using that gun to force Emma to talk, but the original idea was for him to be killed.

Then, when Catherine is satisfied with Emma’s answer, Emma tries to have Catherine killed by saying she has a gun to the cops, and with how Catherine harmed Marshall, you know they were looking for blood. Thankfully, Alice kept anything from happening to Catherine, but Jay is another story. She kills that man by asphyxiation via cutting off his oxygen supply and covering his mouth. Thus connecting her and Catherine in a whole new way.

As for the aftermath? Catherine ends up in prison, married to Alden, as promised, but whether or not she’ll get justice is anyone’s guess. Nora does get, from Alice, the files Alden gave to Danny, but with her having the desire to take down or control Ed, she doesn’t immediately act on it. However, with Alice being allowed to join Nora’s team, her first task, in the secured room, is to watch her own tape, and after Alice stomachs that, she looks into all the cases her tape was involved in – hinting that Alice might be building up a list of people she may target.

Other Noteworthy Information

  • Marshall: Despite Marshall going to the shelter to accost Alice, not take down Catherine, the narrative is changed to make it sound like he was, and he is given an honor.
  • Danny: Danny makes it sound like he is going to have a career change as he and Alice vacation, kiss, maybe even have sex, down at the Jersey Shore. It isn’t 100% clear how their relationship is right now; the only thing we do know is that he seems to have gotten past seeing her face in one of those videos, and they are moving forward.
  • Isabel: Isabel’s body is taken from Hart Island and given a proper grave. Elena is there to see it, but nothing further is done with Emma’s DNA being under Isabel’s nails or how Isabel’s body got desecrated.

Catherine and Alice’s Relationship [86/100]

What’s interesting about Catherine and Alice’s relationship is that you can see both appreciate the darkness and light within one another. Alice can see Catherine is trying, struggling, but at her core is a good person. Catherine, in turn, can understand Alice’s pain, see through her BS, and might be the person who accepts her flaws and all the most.

But, at the same time, I think they enable and empower each other’s demons. Alice knew there was a chance Catherine could go mad and kill Emma, Jay, and maybe snap and take her out too. In some ways, even with her talking Catherine down, I think she had an Ed-type of mindset where the ends could justify the means, and I believe Catherine recognized that.

Catherine saw what Alice was capable of and pushed her to embrace it. That permission is part of the reason Alice was able to kill Jay. Catherine’s talk about how killing made her feel powerful, like she was taking back something lost or taken from her, spoke to Alice. It wasn’t sympathy, soft kisses, and trying to look past things as Danny offered. Catherine looked Alice in the eyes when she spoke and saw her without flinching.

Making their relationship sometimes the most romantic one in all of Furious.

Nora Having Ed By The Cojones [84/100]

The season finale doesn’t give a concrete direction for the next season, but does leave enough space for theories and guesses. Alice has access to the room where her video and others are held, and she sees all who may have accessed her file and what cases they are associated with. This could lead to her targeting certain people or being fuel for her to walk in Nora’s footsteps. It’s all speculation.

However, what is not speculation is Nora believing she has something on Ed, and how she can use that. As shown, she isn’t necessarily trying to get Ed fired. Nora is smart enough to know that for someone who is trying to climb the ladder like Ed, it is better to have him by the balls than castrate him. I mean, look at what she wanted to do when Catherine was in the shelter, and she was planning to get her then.

The resources, the approvals, everything that could come from having a man like Ed under some kind of control isn’t something I imagine Nora wanting to give up. Especially with a subordinate like Alice who still has that fire and could use someone who has the ability to throw some gasoline and not have to worry about someone rushing to put her flame out.

On The Fence

Only Learning Part Of The End Of Isabel’s Story [77/100]

It’s not clear if season two may answer any questions regarding Isabel and Catherine’s case. From reading Alex Welch’s interview with writer and creator Liz Meriwether (From The Wrap), there is this push that the show isn’t going to dwell on old cases. Never mind that Catherine’s actress (Lola Petticrew) was signed up for one season and has a new job.

So, with that in mind, and Jay Easton dead, it is hard to say if the show may investigate Isabel having Emma’s skin under her fingernails. Emma said it came from when she was trying to console Isabel, and Isabel was in pain, but was that the truth? Never mind, considering how Isabel’s body was discarded, there is the question of who was involved in that?

Sadly, we may never know, and a part of me recognizes this is what Nora talks about. You can’t get caught up on one case; you have to build a tough skin and manage the trauma you take on. Now, will there be some wins, like when Elena hugs Nora, or when Nora gets one over on Ed? Yes. But it may not always make up for all the losses, and that is part of the job.

Danny and Alice’s Relationship [75/100]

Let me be clear, I don’t want Alice to forego sex and romance. Part of her complexity is that she is someone who is still sexual, even likes rough sex, considering what has happened to her – and not treating it as a trauma response. But with Danny, I feel like that’s a fantasy for her which shouldn’t have been explored.

I am still firmly in the camp of seeing Danny as a big brother to Alice, the only family she has, and things becoming intimate as they do this episode feels icky. Like lines were crossed that shouldn’t have been, and for Danny, it was less about Alice and more about being desired by someone after his divorce. Maybe having something in his life that might be stressful but is worth it, and unlike his relationship with his kid, there isn’t an unsolvable guilt attached.

But, considering there is the chance for a time jump (not confirmed, just throwing it out there), maybe season 2 can begin with the relationship resetting and it being clear things didn’t work out, and they are back to being friends – if that.

Overall

Our Overall Rating [80/100]

Did Furious give us the perfect season finale? No. It left many unanswered questions, didn’t necessarily give absolute justice to Isabel or Catherine, but at the same time, none of that was ever promised. Furious has always held true that its characters are imperfect, their stories are imperfect, and thus, the ending would be just the same.

But you can’t deny that it kept you engaged, and even if disappointed that some didn’t get the comeuppance you want or certain things went unanswered, and may never be, you, like me, are already counting the days until the second season. Never mind hoping it won’t be more than a year for this show to come back.
