Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation: Season 3 Episode 10 – Recap and Review

Rudy meets someone only bested by two people, one of them being Laplace, and it seems they are hell-bent on making him one of their puppets.

Episode 10 “An Audience with an Immortal Demon King” Recap and Details

So, does Kishirika have the cure Nanahoshi needs? Yes and no. She knows it is Sokas grass, but also that it is only found beneath the castles of every demon king, and she doesn’t have access to any of them. Luckily, in some ways, King Atoferatofe Rybak, or Atofe for short, is the current occupant of the castle, and with the capture of Kishirika, it is arranged by King Atofe’s right hand, Moore, to get some Sokas grass.

However, when things become unlucky isn’t the case of what happens to Kishirika, since no one seems to pay her much mind. The bigger problem is King Atofe wants to add Rudy to their royal guard and when he rejects them, they get mad. In fact, it causes a series of battles and with only North-God Kalman and the Demon God Laplace ever besting King Atofe, even the combination of Rudy and Zanoba may not be enough.

In fact, they have to catch her off guard to even try to escape the Demon Continent and return to Perugius’ fortress. Unfortunately for them, King Atofe is a 5,000+ year old veteran of war and battle, so a quick escape was never an option. But with them sending out scouts into Perugius’ fortress, it seems they angered him enough to get involved.

Note: King Atofe is immortal, so Perugius can’t kill her. On top of that, even if he could, there is a pact between Perugius and King Atofe’s husband, the founder of the North-God style, Kalman Rubak. This pact seems to be regarding not going to war with one another. However, to aid Rudy and Nanahoshi by extension, he does split King Atofe in half and send her flying – which he presents as not breaking the pact. Ultimately giving him, his familiars, as well as Rudy and his crew, more than enough time to leave leisurely.

  • Character Summary: King Atoferatofe, often referred to as King Atofe, is immortal, the sister of Badigadi, wife of the founder of the North-God style, Kalman Rubak, and for over 5,000 years, has only been best by two people. One being her husband, the other being the Demon God Laplace. It isn’t clear how she became King, but it is made clear she has beef with Emperor Kishirika, due to drinking her prized alcohol.

  • Character Summary: Moore is the head knight of King Atofe’s royal guard, who is part of the majority who volunteered, rather than were forcibly recruited.

Review and Commentary

Highlights

A Notable Series Of Battles [84/100]

While not a single one of the battles were long, the fights against King Atofe were perhaps the most entertaining this season, outside of Eris’ in the dojo. It gave Rudy a reason to test his newfound spells, got Zanoba involved in the action, and one can only hope this is just the first of many battles. For with the way King Atofe is presented, I can’t imagine her not trying to coerce Rudy into a battle and make him part of their royal guard again. Especially when Perugius isn’t around do deter them.

Perugius Living Up To His Name [85/100]

I might be in the minority, but I felt there wasn’t a thing interesting about Perugius when we initially met him. That changes slightly in this episode, almost purely due to the way he handles King Atofe’s scout, and King Atofe as well. For with King Atofe being built up and it sounding like only two entities have defeated her cleanly in 5000 years, Perugius doing so with ease builds him up more than the majority of stories we’ve heard about him.

Increased Curiosity About The Deals Perugius Made [83/100]

With that said, I’d like to hear about this pact Perugius has with King Atofe’s husband. Is it simply a neutrality pact, or was it part of what ended the Laplace war? I ask this because, while Jobless Reincarnation does a lot of world-building and character development, one thing it has been avoiding is the politics of its world.

Yes, we’ve seen Ariel seek favor as she tries to claim the throne, but that is a storyline so far on the back burner it is basically charred to a crisp. Also, don’t forget all the drama between Rudy and Eris’ family members that led to Eris’ grandfather being beheaded. We still have not gotten any notable follow-up on that.

But who knows? Maybe Rudy will be bold enough to start asking questions after Nanahoshi gets better? For example, maybe we can learn more about how the Laplace War ended, since, going by how Perugius talks, Laplace isn’t dead. He, she, they are simply subdued for an undisclosed amount of time, and Perugius will have to rise again to keep them from wreaking havoc.

Which all pushes the idea that there are likely a series of pacts in existence allowing for peace, rather than demons experiencing an embarrassing defeat and being kept at bay.

While the battles are the main highlight, the follow-up questions based on the dialog will be the long-term highlights to come from this episode. Be it what pacts were formed to keep peace, will King Atofe ever seek out Rudy again? Where is Badigadi, and will he find themselves involved? Heck, where is the King’s husband?

So many questions were born this episode, and I can only hope we don’t have to wait forever for answers.
