Highlights

In The Beginning, It Was Jaw-Dropping

Keyaru saying "Revenge is absolutely sublime."
Keyaru: Revenge is absolutely sublime

As we witness Keyaru’s past life, it was difficult to watch. To see someone brutalized as Keyaru was made the idea of him getting revenge something you could easily get behind. For when you meet this kind kid, from a small village, get raped, drugged, and passed around as he was? It sickens you in a way that very few shows may ever make you feel from the premiere.

A Different Kind of Hero

In Keyarga’s new life, while very much focused on his revenge, there is also the revenge he seeks for others – specifically demi-humans. For with most of his tormentors emboldened by the Gioral Kingdom’s royal family, he recognizes if the kingdom falls, a byproduct to his revenge will be a better world. This especially becomes true after he is introduced to the city of Branica, which is integrated.

And with that, you get an almost MA version of The Rising of the Shield Hero but with Keyaru far less worried about being liked, or his reputation, than Naofumi.

Keyarga’s Fight Scenes

Hawkeye and Keyarga in combat

Generally, Keyarga, Keyaru in his new life, is overpowered and handles most of his enemies with a simple touch. However, when fighting a few characters, Kureha, Blade, and Hawkeye, the battles aren’t easy, and they do get the best of Keyarga in the fight. Mind you, in the end, he defeats most of them, but with each time we’re presented the idea Keyarga isn’t untouchable, it suggests his revenge won’t be a simple journey that is handled by him getting close enough to say, “Heal.”

On The Fence

It Could Have Done and Been So Much More

Considering the plans Keyarga mentions beyond his revenge, Redo of Healer could have been and done so much more. Keyarga mentions upending the kingdom, installing Eve as the demon lord, traveling, and us seeing him often start small businesses with locals and more. Which, when you take note of Redo of Healer loving sex scenes and sexual violence, could have led to the show feeling balanced, similar to Jobless Reincarnation.

Yet, instead, the sex is used to the extent it is hard to not become desensitized to it, whether it is supposed to be tantalizing or violent. And considering the story doesn’t keep up creatively as the various ways Keyarga can have sex with Princess Flare, his slave Setsuna, Kureha, and later Princess Norn, as well as people can get assaulted or raped? Well, in time Redo of Healer devolves into a very uncomfortable hentai that seems to think the story is a ends to a means to an ends to get to its next sex scene.

Rating: Mixed (Stick Around)

Freiya, Norn, and Setsuna waiting for affection
Freiya, Norn, and Setsuna waiting for affection

While you understand why Redo of Healer exhibits its favored kind of violence, it loses its shock, edge and becomes gratuitous after a certain point. And the unfortunate part of that is, you can see Keyaru’s journey could have been so much more. But rather than focus on his journey, his acts of revenge, and changing the kingdom for the better, more and more, it wants to focus on sex scenes that aren’t even that tantalizing. Especially when you consider most of the participants are either brainwashed, being raped, are enslaved, or dependent on Keyaru, not his equal.
