Style Me For Christmas (2024): Review and Summary

While it is always wonderful to see Raven Goodwin in a starring role, “Style Me For Christmas,” focusing on a talented woman’s desirability to an R&B superstar does lead to a tightrope walk between problematic and aspirational.

Plot Summary

Tiffany is a 2nd-generation boutique owner struggling due to inheriting not only her mother’s shop but also her debts and inventory. She is behind on rent and can barely keep her mom’s clients, and with a rent increase coming, something has to give. Enter Sarah and Tedee. Sarah is Tedee’s manager, and she thinks his womanizing, bad-boy appeal is affecting the sales of his latest album, so her idea is to find a plain Jane, everywoman type, to recover Tedee’s image.

As you can imagine, someone like Tedee, who is used to a certain look when it comes to women, doesn’t quickly take to Tiffany, but as he gets to know her, things change. However, with the initial plan to just use Tiffany for PR lingering and Tedee’s fame-chasing ex Nicole learning about it, will Tiffany and Tedee’s relationship last past Christmas?

Character Descriptions

Tiffany

Tiffany (Raven Goodwin)

Tiffany is a fashion designer and stylist, like her mom, but while her mom was more into a classic look, Tiffany prefers creating things which are more chic and meant to stand out.

Tedee

Tedee (Mario Barrett)

Tedee Maxwell is an ATL native who is a Grammy winner, has two platinum albums, and is a known womanizer. According to Sarah, this is messing with his ability to have future hit records.

Sarah

Sarah (Cheryl Frazier)

Sarah is Tedee’s manager and has been managing him since he was a teenager. With his mother not around, she has assumed that role in his life. She has used it, in many ways, to better his career, but Tedee could submit that some of her PR ideas have bit him in the behind.

Nicole

Nicole (Sincerely A. Ward)

Nicole is an influencer whose numbers aren’t where she needs to be at the next level, so, using her past relationship with Tedee, she tries to jumpstart her career through scandal.

Audience

“Style Me For Christmas” is for people who love the film’s stars more than anything else it offers.

Highlights

Raven Goodwin

Raven Goodwin deserves to be the lead in all she is in and makes movies like “Style Me For Christmas” better than they have a right to be. As Tiffany, she crafts a character who is a little corny in her reactions sometimes, but you get into what she is going through, her backstory, and you want to see her succeed, because Goodwin has that special something. It’s the type of charm that makes it so you may find yourself surprised she hasn’t done more holiday movies, for her energy seems to be positioned in the right place.

Low Points

Nicole Wasn’t Necessary

Nicole, the fame-hungry ex, wasn’t needed. “Style Me For Christmas” had more than enough drama, with Tedee using Tiffany to improve his image. Heck, considering Tiffany’s insecurities, how Tedee and Sarah speak, and how the world reacts to Tiffany, they didn’t really need a named villain, for society was doing all that was needed to tear apart Tiffany and Tedee.

Add in that a bootleg version of The Shade Room is featured, and you could easily imagine gossip sites and more picking apart Tiffany, planting seeds of what we know is the truth, and Tedee’s wandering eye, as he questions his growing love for Tiffany vs. what he has access to, creating conflict.

On The Fence

Acknowledging The Prejudice The Way It Does

Ultimately, “Style Me For Christmas” is a holiday movie, so you shouldn’t expect it to get too deep. Yes, it does comment on societal standards and how many men like Tedee are geared to look at people like Tiffany. But as much as you may appreciate a movie, especially featuring Black folk, touching upon the subject matter, it also doesn’t do it justice. Tedee gets over himself and starts loving Tiffany for who she is, which is wonderful.

However, it is such a 180-degree turn that it doesn’t feel real, but rather, it is made to fit into the fantasy holiday movie sale. Which granted, for Raven Goodwin, I love seeing her as someone’s love interest, but because of the circumstances which led to that, it feels tainted.
