Review and Commentary
Highlight(s)
Sprague Earning His Place In Community [85/100]
The beautiful thing about Marshland is that it shows anyone can find community anywhere, but sometimes it isn’t simply found; it’s earned. Sprague is new, a stranger, and no one knows why he moved to a small, rural community. Saying it was for space could mean anything, and being vague doesn’t necessarily foster trust.
So it makes you appreciate Mack taking a chance on Sprague, integrating him into the community, and Sprague welcoming the opportunity to show he wants to make this place home – nothing more, nothing less.
Seeing A Person Who Is LGBTQIA+ Who Doesn’t Yearn For City Life [84/100]
Representation goes far beyond seeing a person who looks like you, loves like you, or shares aspects of themselves you find in short supply. It is also about them living, surviving, even thriving in environments beyond what is commonly seen. Many stories about LGBTQIA+ people frame leaving a small town for the city as an escape, sometimes even glamorizing the move.
Now, let’s not discount that Sprague presents as masculine, so it could very well be that no one appears to know about their gender identity and just sees him as a guy with an odd name. However, I think it is still important to acknowledge that Sprague chose this town, seems genuinely happy, and may not have found the type of group you’d often expect LGBTQIA+ people to have in media, but he seems to have found his people.
Overall
Our Rating (84/100): Positive (Worth Seeing)
Marshland reminds you that there are still so many aspects of LGBTQIA+ life left to explore, and an underrepresented view is that of those who don’t want or like the idea of living in the city. Now, are there fewer built-in communities for people like Sprague outside the city? Yes. But that doesn’t mean you can’t find people who embrace you, spend time with you, and care about your well-being.
