Movie Summary

Fox hasn’t had the easiest life. After her dad died, her mom became a serious, sometimes violent addict, and this forced Fox to leave, only to end up in the arms of Goldie, a drug dealer as abusive as her mom, whose work with the local police, Sergeant Breaker, was lucrative. But, in time, Fox’s guilt regarding abandoning her little sister leads her to betray Goldie and attempt to reunite her family.

Review and Commentary

Highlight(s)

The Majority Of Characters Are Memorable [80/100]

Stone Cold Fox may not win awards for its storyline or dialogue, but it does try to make the majority of its cast stand out. Whether it be through casting actors with presence, or who know how to make the best of an average script, whether it is Kiernan Shipka as Fox, Mishel Prada as Frankie, and those whose screen time is in between, you get a sense that they matter. You get a sense that they matter — that this isn’t just about paying SAG dues to keep health insurance, but about making each character contribute to Goldie’s influence or Fox’s pursuit of her own flawed, mismatched family.

I’d even say, while we get a brief background of many of those in the movie, for a lot of characters, like Jamie Chung’s Officer Corbett, you wouldn’t mind more details of how they ended up in the town of Mesquite Vista.

On The Fence

If You’ve Seen One Kiernan Shipka Starring Movie, It Can Feel Like You’ve Seen Them All [74/100]

As a Kiernan Shipka fan, I’m starting to feel like she brings the same performance to every role — scrappy, sarcastic, and increasingly predictable. What we mean by this is, outside of Swimming With Sharks, she usually plays someone scrappy, sarcastic, and while it isn’t a terrible schtick, it is starting to lose its luster, and makes her humor feel a bit dialed in.

Which isn’t to say she isn’t capable of doing more, but it seems in pursuit of consistently acting, quality is slowly starting to shift to the point she could do roles like Fox in her sleep, compared to Jodie in The Last Showgirl, a supporting role, which gave a reminder that she is capable of more. For while Fox is longing for connection in Stone Cold Fox, there is an avoidance in presenting that pain in a meaningful way.

You Get The Vibe They Are Going For [73/100]

Like Totally Killer, Stone Cold Fox nails the aesthetic of its era, capturing the late ’80s vibe through its look and pop culture nods while channeling the energy of ’60s and ’70s action movies. But beyond the surface, the film struggles to find its tonal balance. The humor often undercuts both the weight of Fox’s situation and her psychological state, leaving the movie unsure of how to handle the kind of levity that once gave its inspirations grit and charm.

Because of that, even as you understand the abuse Fox has endured and the guilt that haunts her, Shipka is rarely allowed to hold onto those emotions long enough for them to truly resonate.

Overall

Our Rating (75/100): Mixed (Divisive)

Stone Cold Fox has Tubi movie vibes, and you should likely wait until a streaming platform picks this up. It is good enough, but certainly not worth paying to see on its own.
