Review and Commentary
On The Fence
- Slightly Generic Family Dynamics Saved By Actors’ Charisma
Overall
Our Rating (73/100): Mixed (Divisive)
Mango Chile Pie often feels like a run-of-the-mill comedy. The sister dynamics don’t present anything special, especially in the writing, but the actors do their best to make up for it. Each one has charisma and presence that make you wish they had better material to work with. And while the animation sequences do liven things up, it never feels like enough.
Granted, you have to use different standards when judging any short, but at 15 minutes, Mango Chile Pie is longer than the average short. So, between your generic arguments about who the mom liked more, who felt neglected, and the destruction of what remains of the mom’s legacy, it all felt like a safe route was taken with the story, dialog, and development of the characters.
Ultimately, leaving you with something that had good intentions but maybe not the best execution.
