Summary
Kyrah and Issac were once part of a special ops team, Shadow Force, originally meant to take out dictators and other undesirables throughout the world. However, between the complicated relationship Kyrah had with their commander, Jack Cinder, paired with falling in love, and getting pregnant, by Issac, and the focus of Shadow Force shifting, Kyrah and Issac went AWOL and found themselves, and their son, forever hunted as long as Jack and the other members of Shadow Force lived.
Now, with Kyrah and Issac’s son, Ky, now five and going on six, it seems time to stop running and face the only thing that could threaten the family.

Review and Commentary
Highlight(s)
Lead Chemistry [82/100]
When it comes to Kerry Washington and Omar Sy, you’re going to wish they forego being in an action movie and instead went for a straight romance. From him speaking French, how the two move and interact with one another, and how they look as a family? It’s all too cute.
But I especially like that, with Issac being hard of hearing, they’ve come up with cute ways to communicate, like how Kyrah would tap on Issac’s head so he could get a sense of his son’s heartbeat when Kyrah was pregnant. Little things like that make it so it isn’t just attractive people playing husband and wife, but you get a sense they crafted what could be seen as a couple in extraordinary circumstances.
Da’Vine Joy Randolph [84/100]
I believe that Queen Latifah paved a road that Randolph is speeding on and, if we’re being frank, surpassing Queen Latifah in a multitude of ways. For whether playing someone who is queer, a bad ass, or one of the funniest people in the movie, she nails it and as Auntie Marvella. For whether playing off Method Man or showing she is as dangerous as Kyrah, just not trying to fight everybody, while Randolph may play a supporting role, yet again, you are given every reason imaginable for her to be the star of a film, beyond being one of the biggest names part of it.
Low Point(s)
The Shadow Force Came Off Like Henchmen [63/100]
I was so disappointed in all the members of the Shadow Force. First and foremost, besides their physical look, nothing was made to be special about them. We didn’t get to know that this one was an explosives expert, that this one does well with knives, or what you usually get with action movies, where everyone is a specialist in something. Then, to add to the film’s issues, they get zero character development.
Truly, the only way you would know any of them had a name would be to look them up on IMDB. I don’t think anyone’s name was said, they don’t get to say much, not even a funny line to be somewhat memorable, and their fight scenes? For what is supposed to be such an elite crew, some of their deaths were so quick or disgraceful that you may wonder how come they lived this long to even make it to the final showdown?
On The Fence
The Lead Villain [73/100]
Jack wasn’t much better than his henchmen, the Shadow Force. You are told he is trying to raise his profile in politics, outside his shady military dealings, but not enough is put in there to show why he needed Kyrah and Issac dead – especially considering they seemingly didn’t want to be bothered. Then, on top of that, their method of trying to make him into a bad ass early on was having him fight people who weren’t on his level and posed barely any threat to him.
When I tell you Shadow Force botched its villains, it did so in such a disappointing way. I mean, even throwing in Jack formerly having a thing with Kyrah and how they fleshed that out, it just took away anything which could have made you take Jack serious and think he was not only a bad ass but, like most good villains, some form of misunderstood.
Overall
Our Rating (75/100): Mixed (Divisive)
Shadow Force comes off like the type of movie that didn’t know its real hook. Washington and Sy’s roles as former government operatives ended up being a waste of their chemistry. Also, as much as we love Da’Vine Joy Randolph, her role in this film felt very much like she joined to work with this person, to make a check, and not because this was genuinely a good role to play, never mind being one of the first movies after she won an Oscar for The Holdovers.
But what really brings Shadow Force down is the villains. The lead villain fits that mold of a desperate man trying to heal his ego, and what are supposed ot be elite soldiers? With how they are presented, all of them, except for our heroes, feel like the no-name henchmen who usually are the warm-up before someone actually worth taking seriously appears—ultimately, leaving Shadow Force partly living up to the expectation of many of being something dumped into theaters, likely, solely, because there was hope the names attached could bring some kind of box office return.
