The Inheritance (2024) – Written Review

Title Card, The Inheritance

Featuring Peyton List, “The Inheritance” delivers a lot of familiar characters, and a well-tread story, but does give a certain creepiness factor.

Plot Summary

Charles Abernathy Sr is about to turn 75. Originally, his children, Charles Abernathy Jr., Madeline, Drew, Kami, and Drew’s wife Hannah, thought they were invited to his home for a birthday party. As always with the family, seeing each other was awkward since their mom passed, but after two years, this reunion was overdue.

However, as the day goes on and Charles Sr. reveals a price has been put on his head and he is likely to be killed, the mood switches. Add in Charles ties his children’s ability to get their multi-billion dollar inheritance, which relies on him living past midnight; it makes things all the more tense.

But, what none of Charles Sr.’s kids know is that it may not be a human but another type of entity that is threatening their father’s life.

Highlights

Watching This At Night In The Dark May Lead You To Be Creeped Out

With “The Inheritance” featuring occult imagery and a demonic figure, adding in dark scenes that put you into the mindset of the character where you find yourself squinting to see what’s there is a nice touch. Mind you, if you are watching alone at night and have a home that either has thin walls or makes random sounds, you will be creeped out.

However, who doesn’t watch horror movies to safely experience fear?

On The Fence

It Lacks A Standout Feature Regarding Its Story and Characters

While “The Inheritance” does produce scary moments, the story and characters don’t drive this film to be as remarkable as it could have been. The archetypes we often see are all there. Hannah is the outsider, married to the nice member of the family. There is a younger sibling who is cool, compared to the older ones who are butt wipes. The living parent? The one responsible for the family’s wealth? They were absent and cold, and the person who raised the kids are dead at this point.

A lot of the story is serviceable for setting up jump scares and visions of the demon Mammon. But, even as they try to show Madeline and Charles Jr. aren’t as bad as they seem, they don’t push them to be people you could genuinely care about. They are just fodder to set up why this demon is hunting everyone, which doesn’t lead to a notable reveal.

The Inheritance (2024) – Review

Summary

“The Inheritance” seems like a strange film for Netflix to drop, considering it does have a creep factor, a recognizable young starlet, and does seem like the type of film that would have a weekend pop before it fades into the ethos. But, perhaps that was the problem? It’s a forgettable film which may barely scratch an itch.
