Lily

Lily (Emily Jampel) bored in class
“Lily (Emily Jampel) bored in class,” Blood Hana, directed by M.G. Evangelista, 2022, (NewFest)

While religious, to the point of reading her bible outside of church, Lily isn’t the type who preaches the good news at school and is ostracized. She is normal, your everyday girl, who just so happens to vomit flowers from time to time.

Alex

Alex (Emily Bessa) flipping off Lily and her friends
“Alex (Emily Bessa) flipping off Lily and her friends,” Blood Hana, directed by M.G. Evangelista, 2022, (NewFest)

Alex is either an atheist or agnostic, and with being the new kid with a chip on her shoulder, she isn’t making any friends fast. However, something draws Lily to her, and maybe it is God, considering Lily did ask for someone.

Highlights

An Interesting Twist (Though Not Of The Shock Value Kind)

Standing out without trying too hard can be difficult. There are only so many ways to do a teen romance, and while queer romances aren’t pushed to the forefront and still are dominated by men, the formula doesn’t change much.

But, by presenting Lily as someone who is religious but not to the point of dwelling on going to hell for liking a girl, there is something different there. And yes, the whole flower blooming from her thing is weird, especially since it induces vomiting, but it helps the short stand out. Which is a challenge since shorts are paired up with similar themes, and because NewFest is focused on the LGBTQIA+ community, it means people watching your short will find dozens, maybe around 50 or more, shorts similar to yours.

Luckily though, “Blood Hana” has the performances and character development to stand on its own.
