David Makes Man
Throughout the whole episode, three versions of David, the original (Akili McDowell), the adult version (Kwame Patterson), and toddler (Eilan Joseph), are in a therapy session with Dr. Halloway (April Grace), and while season 2 has been a major adjustment, this episode showed why they needed to do a time jump. It wasn’t because fans didn’t deserve to see David in Hurston, and later college, but rather they didn’t want to focus on David going through traumatic things anymore. What they wanted to show is how a grown man processes and uses that trauma, for better or worse. It was a call to action on why many Black men, and people in general, need therapy, and in this episode, we get real deal therapy. It isn’t you paying someone to listen to your woes for an hour. Like seeing any licensed and certified doctor, it is about them listening to your needs and presenting you the work that needs to be done to heal and get better – heck, in David’s case, be better.
Skye Dakota Turner as 10 Year Old Aretha Franklin
What Ms. Turner presents you as the young Arethra Franklin is reminiscent of Kyla Pratt in Love & Basketball, and almost every 90s/ early 00 movie that uses a young actor to set things up for the adults. She gives you the kind of performance which competes with their adult counterpart and makes it so she deserves to be in conversation whenever Jennifer Hudson’s name is mentioned when it comes to this movie.
Frank Wanting To Experience What Everyone Else Is
Imagine you are a deaf person, as is your wife and son, but your daughter is not. On top of that, your daughter is a singer, a talented one, that can move people to tears. This is your child, who you raised, and her talent that has such an effect on people, you have to experience through third parties to know how good it is. Watching that is devastating and Frank’s need to understand it by, after Ruby’s recital, feeling her vocal cords, putting his hand on her chest to feel her breathing, it drove us to tears.

Well, I guess it’s not stealing when you think everything is yours.
I just wanna show my hand. I don’t wanna play poker anymore. I just wanna skip all the layers and just go straight to the crazy, and just let the chips fall where they may. And, you know, just show him, show him the core of the onion.
