The Threesome – Lacking Sex and Romance, But Gives Comedy

While the romance is iffy, The Threesome delivers on the comedy.

Movie Summary

For months, maybe years, Connor has been pining over Olivia. She is eccentric, slightly aloof, but in Connor’s mind, especially at 30, she is the type of girl he’d want to settle down with. Unfortunately for him, she doesn’t take him seriously and, at best, strings him along.

Enter Jenny, a girl that Connor’s best friend Greg points out, and Connor hits it off with Jenny to the point of Olivia getting jealous, and proposing a threesome. That happens, and next thing you know, Connor is told by both Jenny and Olivia that they are pregnant.

It’s awkward, since Jenny is nice, like really nice, but Connor still has feelings for Olivia. Thus leading to 9 months of Connor still wanting to be with Olivia as Jenny asks Connor to pretend to be her boyfriend, due to her parents being, not hyper religious, but more accepting of the pregnancy if she were at least with the father.

Review and Commentary

Highlight(s)

Greg [85/100]

In many ways, Greg saves the movie. Watching Connor, for reasons I struggle to understand, sometimes feel torn between Jenny and Olivia, becomes immensely frustrating to watch, as noted below. Greg, though, is the type of scene stealer who was crafted with a level of balance needed for a movie like The Threesome.

He embraces how ridiculous the scenario is of Connor getting two girls pregnant within 24 hours. Also, he has not only a good time with Connor, but between previously knowing Olivia and Jenny enjoying how forward he can be, it isn’t like he just hones in on Connor and that’s it. But what most may enjoy is that while Greg may steal a scene or have a funny quip, he isn’t around so much or talking in every other scene, to the point of getting annoying.

Greg is really just there to remind the audience that these people do live in the real world and yes, someone understands how ridiculous this whole scenario is – and will, like the audience, enjoy every minute of it.

Jenny [84/100]

Jenny seems like she might be part of the wrong movie. In my mind, Jenny’s story of the girl who has a slight religious background, got pregnant after hooking up with a cute and nice guy, is a movie within itself. Then add her dealing with them not dating, but telling her parents they were, her unsure if he has feelings for her while she is going through this notable change, it has all the laughs, drama, and emotions you could want.

Because, seriously, while they didn’t bond under ideal conditions, Jenny seems like the type anyone would be lucky to have as their baby momma, and hopefully something more.

On The Fence

It’s A Challenge To Understand Connor’s Attraction To Olivia At Times [74/100]

Olivia is toxic. Not only that, she plays games, isn’t sure what she wants, and Connor’s simple self chasing her made me question if he loved himself. We meet his mom, who clearly loves him, but has healthy boundaries, so it isn’t an issue of maybe his mom was distant, so why was common sense not common in his interactions with Olivia? It was hard to understand.

And mind you, Olivia has her moments when she is sweet or cute; Zoey Deutch brings her charm to the character. But more often than not, she comes off like the type who says they like banter in their dating profile, but don’t know where the line is.

Overall

Our Rating (81/100): Positive (Worth Seeing)

While Olivia puts a asterisk on The Threesome being a romantic comedy, unless the point was to call her relationship with Connor a joke, you’ll still laugh, wish Connor saw what Jenny had to offer, and think to yourself, one person didn’t need to be in this movie, and it is the person who looks like a third wheel on the poster.

Video Text

  1. Intro Slide
  2. Summary: For longer than Greg thought was healthy, his best friend Connor has wanted to be with Olivia, especially after they hooked up.
  3. Summary: However, Olivia doesn’t seem to be looking for a serious relationship, never mind one with Connor.
  4. Summary: Enter Jenny, a nice girl who gets stood up at the bar Olivia and Greg work at, and after spotting her, Greg sends Connor to Jenny, in hopes that he would move on.
  5. Summary: But, seeing their chemistry, Olivia gets in the middle, convinces all parties to have a threesome, and we watch Connor deal with getting both girls pregnant and navigating his relationships with them.
  • Review: I won’t say that Jaboukie Young-White saved The Threesome, but I will say he is one of the few consistent, not frustrating parts, of the movie – and consistently made me laugh.
  • Review: This is a highlight because Connor is excruciatingly frustrating as you see him try to balance things between Olivia and Jenny, and you question his logic and decisions every step of the way.
  • Review: This is especially true when it comes to his relationship with Jenny, since, while coming from a slightly religious family, she seems to be all the good parts of Olivia, without the drama.
  • Review: But, after a certain point, you find yourself forced to remember that Connor is in a precarious situation, but luckily, between Greg and his mom, he has back-ups regarding raising his children.
  • Overall (81/100): While Connor’s decision-making frustrated me to the point of being a blemish on the film, there is no denying that while the romance is iffy in The Threesome, the comedy is undeniable and will make most who this movie was made for laugh.
