Movie Summary
Casey is struggling in multiple areas of his life. His relationship with Alex seems to be going downhill, to the point it is feasible to imagine a breakup on the horizon. On top of that, he is in a dead-end job, and to make matters worse, he is starting to see horrific things anytime he closes his eyes. Not Alex leaving him, maybe memories he has long buried, but people graphically dying.
He seeks doctors, tries to grow closer to Alex, and even takes up smoking again as a means to calm his mind and lessen these visions. However, he soon learns that something he has long forgotten is the key to his visions, and if he wants to rid himself of the horrors, he’ll have to do something drastic.
Cast and Characters
Casey (Izzy Martinez)
- Character Summary: Casey is a former computer engineering major who is struggling right now in life. He has a dead-end job, no real social interaction outside of Alex, his girlfriend, and the security guard for their apartment complex, and now he has begun to have horrific visions. The kind that, no matter how much he sees a therapist and tries to follow the regimen prescribed, aren’t fixing his problem.
Alex (Katlin Svadbik)
- Character Summary: Alex is a nursing student, working as a bartender, among other things, to help make ends meet. She is also Casey’s girlfriend who sometimes struggles with his lack of initiative, but because he was there for her during a tough time in the past, she is trying to hang in there.

The Initial Perception Of Casey Having A Mental Illness [83/100]
Initially, when we meet Casey and he has hallucinations, you are pushed to think maybe he has a mental illness like schizophrenia. He is put on antipsychotics, and from visions of people who self-harmed to entities who seemingly want him dead, It Hunts feels less about something externally coming for Casey as much as it is something inside his head.
This draws you into Casey’s story, especially as we see Alex, despite how their relationship was before things got bad, doubling down on being there for Casey in his time of need. Mind you, while still working, studying to be a nurse, and making sure Casey doesn’t disappear somewhere he could get hurt.
It all makes for the kind of romantic drama you may not be expecting, especially since it has a sprinkle of horror elements which make you worry about what Casey may do, or is capable of, to fend off these visions.
On The Fence
The Shift To The Supernatural [78/100]
It’s difficult not to feel torn as the film moves away from Casey having a mental illness to him being some form of a medium. At first, you’ll enjoy it because of who he encounters and him growing to understand what a replay is, a vessel, and how his mind now works. But as the film increasingly pushes the idea that something is actually hunting him, and that it isn’t all in his mind, it becomes harder not to recognize the movie’s need for a villain and something to build toward.
This is when the movie may lose its luster a bit. Because this thing coming after him isn’t as compelling as the story built up, or the journey we’ve seen Casey on. Instead, it feels like a disruptor to what allows you to enjoy the movie, and as desperate times lead to desperate measures, you may find yourself torn about how to feel as the movie comes to an end.

Our Rating (80/100): Positive (Worth Seeing)
It Hunts creates the kind of intrigue you usually don’t get in supernatural films through its exploration of Casey’s mental state and later abilities. Yes, there are moments that may seem grotesque mainly for shock value, but considering Casey’s trauma, you can justify the graphic content due to the state of his mind.
But where it may lose some of its appeal is when the supernatural parts kick into high gear, and it becomes clear there has to be a viable threat, and the movie needs to build towards an ending. That is when It Hunts doesn’t fall apart, but loses its ability to explore and feels coerced to reach a destination. One which may not be ideal for all viewers.
