Summary
With decades of friendship, it was only right that Sam (Rebel Wilson) would be Betsy’s (Anna Camp) maid of honor. However, due to Sam’s real job, being a spy for the US government, she has been inconsistent for years, and thanks to Betsy’s bridesmaids, Betsy replaces Sam as her maid of honor. However, by force, Nadine (Sherry Cola), Sam’s handler, pushes Sam to attend Betsy’s wedding anyway, and this proves to be a good decision.

Why? Because Betsy’s in-laws end up being held hostage by a man named Kurt (Stephen Dorff), who seeks not only their money but also their treasure trove of information for his employers.

Review and Commentary
Highlight(s)
Da’Vine Joy Randolph [82/100]

Of all the actors in this movie, I feel like Randolph as Lydia was the only one who really made me laugh audibly. Mind you, her style of comedy doesn’t change depending on what movie she is in, and so if you liked what she gave in Shadow Force or Dolemite Is My Name, you will get a few chuckles out of her. Not full on, your abdomen hurts, laughs, but she is the most comical.
Quality Action [80/100]
Will Rebel Wilson give Melissa McCarthy’s filmography a challenge, at least in the realm of being a spy or action star? No. However, similar to how most horror movies released hold you over until something better comes, I’d submit that Bride Hard could do the same. There are enough explosions, gun fights, hand-to-hand combat, and MacGyver-style weapons to keep you entertained, and while everything is done with a certain level of comedy, which does take away from the seriousness of people being shot at, killed, or nearly killed, it’s all good enough. You’ll rarely wince at what happens, but again, if you’re waiting until something better comes along, Bride Hard will give you your fix.
On The Fence
Campy Comedy [78/100]

Outside of Ms. Randolph, I’ll admit, there is an effort to make the audience laugh from the rest of the cast. The only issue some may find is that the jokes are as corny as those in the trailer. Note, they aren’t all, or even half, dealing with Sam’s gender, so if you’re worried about that – don’t. But, to be frank, none of them are so strong that they stay with you once the movie is over. They, at best, are good for the moment and are quickly forgotten once the moment is over.
Overall
Our Rating (80/100): Positive (Worth Seeing)
Bride Hard delivers passable action and a few genuine laughs—mostly thanks to Da’Vine Joy Randolph—making it a serviceable placeholder until a stronger action-comedy release comes along. For while the film features solid stunt work, much of its humor leans towards being campy and forgettable, keeping the experience good enough if you have a theater or streaming subscription, but not worth paying for on its own.
