Summary
Lily, a 25-year-old, hasn’t had an easy life. Her mother left her and her father when she was a toddler, and her dad, Bob, is a piece of work. But with no family beyond him, she tries to make it work.
However, there comes a point when the selfish Bob decides to turn his back on Lily, borderline disown her, and this leaves Lily desperate. So, on Facebook, she contacts a man with the same name as her dad, seeking connection, and she doesn’t realize that he needed someone like her just as she needed someone like him.
Cast and Character(s)
Lily (Barbie Ferreira)

Lily isn’t in the best place in her life, but she has something going on. Thanks to her job taking care of someone, she has a roof over her head, some money in her pocket, and a reason to get up in the morning. However, with her mom dead, dad a narcissist, and no other family, and seemingly no friends, things are not great. Could be worst, but not great.
- The actor is also known for their role in “Unpregnant.”
Poppa Bob (French Stewart)

Original Bob is someone who knows how to make things about him, play the victim, and not take accountability. But, he is Lily’s dad so she tries to put up with his flaws and love him despite his issues.
- The actor is also known for their role in “Deadly Class: Season 1.”
Surrogate Bob (John Leguizamo)
Bob is married, works in construction, and is a reserved guy. Mind you, partly because of some past trauma but also because he just likes the peace and quiet.
- The actor is also known for their role in “Violent Night.”

Highlight(s)
A Reminder Of How The Internet Can Lead To Positive Human Connections [82/100]
From online dating to seeking friendships, parasocial relationships with influencers and celebrities, the internet can get a bad rep regarding lonely people seeking connection. But, as shown through Leguizamo’s Bob, there are still good and nice people out there. Also, despite how we can often hear about older people being scammed, especially out of money, there are those like Lily who just need a paternal figure, maybe someone to check in on them, and be the rock their current family cannot be.
I mean, chosen families are important because the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb, and as shown by Lily and Bob, the friendship and love a stranger can give can not only be needed but also healing.
An Emotional Reaction From Everyone [85/100]
Nearly every actor, whether it is the leads or the woman Lily is taking care of, or Surrogate Bob’s wife, leads to you feeling something. Now, does Poppa Bob make you pissed to the point of wishing Lily was more hardened and mean? Absolutely for he says the type of things which no father should say. Especially one who knows they are all their child has, and they, as a parent, weren’t a prize.
But, while Poppa Bob is a piece of work, everyone else says and does the type of things which gets you invested in them getting what they need, what they want, feeling seen, heard, loved, and if you aren’t in the best place with your friendships and relationships, this all will hit you hard and might leave you in tears.
On The Fence
While At Times Slow, It Ends On A High Note [78/100]
Let me be real with you, as wonderful as Lily and Surrogate Bob’s relationship is, as much as you may cry, want to tell your online friends you love them, and want to yell at the screen when Poppa Bob says something cruel or stupid, it takes a while to get there. “Bob Trevino Likes It” is a slow-burning kind of film that doesn’t do things big. It borderline wants to be a slice of life and give grounded characters, performances, and a story.
Heck, even when Poppa Bob decides to disown Lily, it is a dramatic moment, but at that point in the film, sometimes it can be hard to know if we should take a moment seriously, or if there is some form of unintentional comedy going on. However, as the movie goes on, you get a sense this isn’t an overly embellished version of a true story but it wants to really tap into what it can feel like to feel unworthy of love, unvalued by someone, or in a routine that doesn’t feel like you matter beyond what you can give, while barely receiving anything that makes you feel fulfilled.
Overall
Our Rating (81/100): Positive (Worth Seeing)
“Bob Trevino Likes It” probably won’t lead to Barbie Ferreira blowing up like her fellow “Euphoria” alumni Zendaya and Sydney Sweeney, but in terms of creating a character and delivering a performance that establishes she is more than Kat, and could potentially become a indie darling? Her work in “Bob Trevino Likes It” does that and I would even say, for John Leguizamo, who can be very hit and miss with his movie output, this is definitely a reminder that he is not just one of the most prolific Latin actors still working, but also one of the best when the script is right, there is a good director, and he is allowed to embrqace some of his natural awkwardness.
