Aquaman, alongside last year’s Wonder Woman, reminds you that DC was the first to create classic comic book characters and movies.

After being defeated by King Orm in combat, yet stealing his betrothed, Mera and Arthur travel to Italy to find King Atlan’s trident. The one which would allow Arthur to control the seas which was the original plan Mera and Vulko came up with. However, being that Arthur rather talk with his fist than truly communicate, he got roped into fighting King Orm, underwater, thus putting Arthur at a great disadvantage. Luckily though, while it requires video game level, “Go here, then there, solve a riddle, and beat a monster” Arthur does get King Atlan’s trident. He even discovers, despite thinking his mother was sent to her death by King Orvax, she is very much alive. It was just she was trapped in the Hidden Sea, where King Atlan’s trident was, and unable to escape. Reason why? Well, the vortex to get to the hidden sea is one way unless you defeat a Kraken to get King Atlan’s trident and escape that world.

Leading to an ending which has Arthur, in his rematch with King Orm, defeat his brother. Atlanna, no longer needing to fear King Orvax or his influence, because he is dead, returning to Arthur’s father Tom, and it seems Arthur officially stole King Orm’s girl and stopped his war on the surface. Oh, and as for an end credit scene? We just learn Black Manta is still alive, thanks to Atlantis conspiracist Dr. Shin, and is ready to share what Atlantis tech King Orm gave him to kill Arthur on the surface. What does he want in return? Just another match against Aquaman to finally avenge his father who Arthur left to die.

That Fight Scenes Are Flinch Worthy - 90%
Jason Momoa - 89%
The Emotional Bits Are Hit and Miss - 75%

85%

Momoa commands the screen, brings this intensity in his performance which seemingly the stunt team picked up, and while the emotional moments fall flat, this is but the beginning of the brand new DCEU. You have to give this soft-reboot time to learn from its mistakes before you can truly craft a standard to hold it to.
