It’s Hard Out Here: Magic Trick, Darnell, Angie, Zuri, Isis, Fatima, Shawnita, Smitty, Jordan, Keith, Shaad, Riley
Whether we’re talking about dating or finances, things are difficult in Chicago. Hence why, when Darnell gets Emmett’s watch back, he doesn’t have Riley help him set up a sting operation or none of that. He just wants his son’s watch back. Then with Shaad, Darnell finally pulls the trigger on giving over the house. Shaad only accepts on the condition he can pay Darnell, and Darnell is down for that.
Sadly though, their transaction is one of the few ones which are simple. Smitty, in search of a plug, wants to talk to Jordan, Keith’s girlfriend, who just got out of stealing pills for Reg. Now, he does get locked up, Smitty, which could have solved Keith and Jordan’s problem. But then Angie used the emergency money Hannibal left to bail him out.
Thus pushing the idea that while she may remain married to Hannibal, she might be mentally moving on. Which is something Fatima could be thinking about regarding Reg, just as Isis starts to really consider Shawnita.
Grown Folk Business: Tiff, Kiesha, Emmett, Devante, Shay, Jada
After a dream with Jada in it, Emmett reveals to Kiesha that Tiff killed Nuck, and as she promised, she doesn’t stay mad at him. Mind you, he has known for a week, letting you know how little time passes between episodes. But, ultimately, Kiesha doesn’t do anything drastic.

Does Kiesha decide to cut off Tiff? Yes. But there is no yelling, screaming, or coming out of character. Kiesha remains the most mature character on the show, and while she may cry, she stands tall.
The same could be said when Shay, Devante’s mom, talks about taking him back to Pittsburgh. It isn’t clear why she is showing up now or what she thinks has changed – but it seems missing her son is the only reason why she wants him back. Thing is, he has built a stable life and between Kiesha and Emmett, they convince Shay to not see this as pitting Devante against her but doing something for his benefit.
Similar to Tiff giving up her son to let him be raised by her mother.
I Am Spartacus: Jake, Victor, Reg, Tiff, Bakari, Detective Toussaint
Bakari finds himself between a rock and a hard place thanks to Tiff, so it is only natural for him to allow Detective Toussaint to use him to get Tiff off his back. Thing is, I don’t think he factored in Victor trying to take the fall, and then Reg following suit.
Now, why would Victor take the fall for Tiff? He says cause she has kids, but lest we forget, Jake is BARELY grown, his mother just died, and the closest thing to a father figure he has is Victor. This is what seems to be going through Jake’s mind as he pushes Reg to step up and take the fall.
Which ultimately he does, by going to Detective Toussaint directly, and just like Victor, confessing he killed Nuck. But the difference is, Reg somehow knows where the body is buried, and with that, Detective Toussaint, who was hunting Reg before, ends up getting him handed to her on a silver platter.
Review and Commentary
Highlights
The Montages [82/100]
As we’re coming close to the end, seeing a lot of characters’ journeys, from Emmett and Tiff’s, Kiesha’s, even Jake’s, it can get you in your feelings. After all, it has been 8 years this January! So seeing Jake as a tween, being reminded of when Emmett was an outright hoe, with Kiesha hiding in his room, and other moments, it really puts you in the mindset that this show is about to be over. Not just one character’s story, like when Kevin and others left, but everyone’s, at the same time.
On The Fence
Reg’s Arrest Felt Anti-Climatic [73/100]
Reg is Detective Toussaint’s White Whale, and he is a notable player within the drug game of The Chi. Maybe not major, like The Mob, but he has a sizable enough reputation that even Smitty was willing to back down. So, him handing himself over to the police for Victor, while notable on paper, didn’t feel like a big deal watching it play out.
It lacked the emotion needed; it lacked the challenge of this wild boy handing himself over to be put in a cage. I would even say, as much as you see the potential reward for Reg, in winning over his brothers, the risk is completely absent. Making this all feel like the right thing to do, but not a hard decision, pivotal decision, any word you wish to use to push the idea this is truly supposed to mean something beyond a hastened redemption arc.
Kiesha Confronting Tiff [72/100]
Kiesha confronting Tiff, after how we’ve seen her mourn for a good part of the season, felt anti-climactic. And mind you, the episode focuses on both of their relationships with Emmett, and how they both ended up friends, but when it comes time for Kiesha to have a one-on-one with Tiff, it fell flat.
Now, could it be Tiff? Yes. Her scene with her mom didn’t really hit hard, and perhaps we got a similar energy in this scene. But I would also contend that maybe it’s me. Maybe I’m looking for something explosive, notable, and Kiesha simply isn’t the type of character who delivers that. Is she capable? Yes, we’ve seen it happen. She has had multiple storylines, including with her mom in therapy, that shows she can deliver.
But with Kiesha having so much going on, maybe she isn’t at capacity yet to have a blow-up? So, instead we got what we saw on screen: A sense of closure which not only solved for her what happened to Nuck but allowed Kiesha to address some feelings maybe she was pushing aside because she liked and loved Tiff so much?
The Sisters [75/100]

The more we see Angie, Shawnita, and Zuri interact, the more I want them to go away. This is a group I don’t feel like should be introduced at the tail end of a show, or as heavily featured, because they are too good. Shawnita and Isis as a potential thing is way too interesting to tease and not get to see play out.
Angie? Hannibal’s wife, who is messing with other men cause she has needs and likes to be kept? Love-to-hate type of character, especially because Hannibal has often come off like a decent dude. Probably one of the least problematic, in hindsight, compared to any man you name that has been featured on The Chi.
Then, when it comes to Zuri, it is the energy for me and the conversations she either starts or amplifies. The combination of these sisters is perhaps some of the best writing we’ve seen in a while for this show, and to have them start to reach their stride as the show, not just season, is about to end?
Disrespectful.
Overall
Our Overall Rating [75/100]

At this point, I’m worried. Things were built up well for Reg to have a nice payoff, and at one time it felt like one of the few guaranteed highlights of the finale. But, between things feeling rushed and not being impactful, I’m worried the series finale is going to flop now.
Emmett and Kiesha’s wedding is a major thing within the show, but Emmett’s been married before and Kiesha? She has been a character who has deserved so much better for so long that this doesn’t even feel like a consolation prize. So I can only hope they pull something out of nowhere, with some logic there, so that it doesn’t feel like The Chi went from the cream of the crop to a show that lasted this long because of the sudden dearth of decent quality Black dramas.
