We Need To Get The Story Straight: Detective Toussaint, Victor, Reg, Smitty, Tiff, Emmett, Kiesha, Bakari
Tiff decides Bakari is going to be the fall guy. It isn’t clear why she thinks him helping cover up Rob’s death is a strong enough reason for him to take the fall and accept what could happen, but he agrees to it. Thing is, Victor feels uneasy about it, especially as Kiesha hears Bakari killed Nuck, and Emmett questions if it is true. Victor tells him it isn’t, and with that comes a lot of questions about who really killed Nuck?
Regardless of that, since Emmett can’t tell her the truth, Kiesha wants Bakari fired and away from the family, so his hand gets forced. But, as you can imagine, Emmett isn’t the only one with questions. Smitty has them too, and with him still not trusting Tiff, he cuts her off and focuses on maintaining the Mob. But while things on the street may accept some form of status quo, as Detective Toussaint begins her investigation, it seems Bakari might be forced to tell the truth or end up behind bars.
Strategic Moves: Tiff, Reg, Victor, Smitty, Emmett, Angie, Shawnita, Jordan, Keith
With Smitty dropping Tiff, Reg sees an opportunity. Note: not to use Tiff to maybe get on his brother’s good side, but to form a business relationship. Tiff isn’t sure at first, because we all know how Reg moves, but with a smaller operation, it means she can better position herself on profits, and he agrees to start at a 20/80 split, in her favor.
As that happens, Emmett finds himself making moves regarding Smokey’s. Kiesha coercing him to fire Bakari means he is down a person, so he has to rehire Keith, despite their past. Keith getting hired means he pressures his girlfriend Jordan to cut ties with Reg, so they both can go legit. Which means his deal with Tiff has to be lucrative since, losing access to the pills Jordan was boosting, is a major loss.
But, who knows? With Emmett asking Shawnita and Angie to help him expand Smokey’s to Atlanta and Houston, maybe he may find himself, once again, targeted for he is making too much without someone getting a cut? Reg may try to move in, take over as he did with Jake’s party, and considering Emmett’s old ties to The Mob, Smokey’s could become ground zero to some BS again.
Can’t Fulfill Every Desire: Isis, Fatima, Victor, Shaad, Patience, Tiff, Emmett, Kiesha
Victor is still exploring having a relationship with Fatima, but her issue is, per Isis, she wants so badly to have a fantasy that she treats reality as settling. The problem with this is that Fatima wants to be top priority in Victor’s life, over his job, over his passions, and that just isn’t realistic. He will make her a strong focus and influence, but that seems to not be enough.
And as their relationship deals with its complications, so does Shaad and Patience’s. He is still very focused on Nora, and that Patience played a role in her death. Now, yes, she accepted money from Roselyn, and that is what started everything up, but Shaad is ready to excuse that. Patience, though, it is hard to say if she can continue to live up to her name with what she is dealing with.

But, in many ways, Emmett is in the same boat. Kiesha, empowered by Tiff saying she’ll pay for the wedding, decides to get into the driver’s seat and make decisions. Emmett, with him wanting to play the man of the house, finds himself challenged. Leading to what could be a consistent issue for while Kiesha has shown she has no issue being submissive; at the same time, she isn’t going to be steamrolled and treated as if she doesn’t have an opinion. Which, increasingly, beyond their nuptials, could become a problem. Especially as Kiesha says, Emmett doesn’t know where they are going or how to get there, so someone has to step up.
Review and Commentary
Highlights
Fatima’s Storyline Potential – Even If It Won’t Be Realized [82/100]
Because the industry has closed the chapter of telling trans stories as part of the mainstream, like with Pose or Anything’s Possible, it makes storylines like Fatima’s once again feel rare and special, even if they aren’t the best thing out there.
But there is something to say about her desire to live the fantasy many women have about being a man’s top priority and how being trans adds to that. Whether you want to factor in issues with love, safety, consistency, or not feeling optional or disposable, those are all worth exploring. Heck, the show has touched on it before, then it dialed back the role of the LGBT+ community on the show.

So with how Fatima is being set up, it feels less like a call back, like Ronnie’s name being mentioned this episode, and perhaps a reminder of the type of storylines The Chi didn’t make feel secondary, but a notable part of its version of Chicage.
Kiesha and Emmett’s Back and Forth [83/100]
While not a fan of Kiesha and Emmett, I want it to be clear I don’t want them to break up and don’t think, at this point, the idea was even entertained. However, I do like that, as much as they are pushed to be the lead couple, they aren’t made perfect or ideal.
Emmett is still the guy struggling with being the man of the house, since he was raised a single child in a single-parent household. To someone who, frankly, maybe enabled his bad habits longer than she should have. Granted, at this point, he isn’t doing that badly, but you could submit between Q, Douda, and Darnell; he hasn’t had the best or most stable set of not only male figures, but mentors.
Smokey, yes, was an exception. However, increasingly it does feel like Emmett, trying to wrestle control over his life, is trying to compensate for what he can’t do at work or with his kids, and put that on Kiesha. Someone who is on her own journey of not being Emmett’s right hand, in more ways than one, but an equal partner.
Never mind, create a life for herself and seeing her assert herself, call him out, and hold him accountable? Honestly, I love seeing it.
Detective Toussaint Showed Up [84/100]
I feel like Detective Toussaint is underutilized on this show, and has been since her introduction. Yes, the police element bombed early on in the show, and was rightfully removed. However, I think Toussaint was the one bright spot, and it shows someone else thought so, since she has repeatedly appeared and sporadically had a storyline.
Now, though, with Nuck gone, one of the key components to her takedown of Reg, I’m hoping they give her something more than arresting Bakari. If not, make him into a rat so that, between The Mob or maybe Reg’s organization, he is used as a means to an end.
But with that said, considering Nuck did confess to being a rat, shouldn’t Tiff have considered that as a reason for his disappearance? I feel like Smitty may struggle to believe that, especially coming from Tiff, but with Nuck strongly for keeping things low and uneventful with The Mob, him being smart enough to get the police involved might be something logical enough for Smitty to eventually come around to. Maybe not condone or copy, but at least accept.
On The Fence
The Floaters [73/100]
Whether it is Jake, Papa, Lynae, Kenya, and the other late teen or early 20-something characters, with minimal gang ties, there is a need to question what their purpose is. Are they being written, as Kiesha said of Emmett, a bit directionless, with no real destination in mind? It was cute how they had a story about how good life could be without having your phone on your hip, but this isn’t just another season – it is the last.
Kenya’s dad was murdered to start off the season, Papa’s latest mentor/father figure. I get they gave him a storyline where he lost his faith and started smoking and drinking, but what’s next for him? Jake? Yes, this party storyline and new girlfriend give him something to do, but it doesn’t really feel like he is moving forward. He’s just coasting, dabbling, and maybe that is authentic, but it doesn’t lessen the disappointment.
And as for Lynae? Beyond being the catalyst for Nuck’s death, I really don’t know why she is around. Granted, it isn’t like the show is still holding onto Tracy and coercing her onto us, and I wouldn’t say these characters have hit the lows Tracy did. But with the final episodes coming up, it can feel like a waste watching these characters barely offer a thing, besides filler.
Overall
Our Overall Rating [80/100]

The Chi continues to move as if it has more time, or maybe it may end with an extended episode or wrap-up movie. Neither has been announced yet, so considering this will be 10 episodes, and we have three left, having a lot of middling characters, storylines that need more time to really give their all, and not much to look forward to that is notable? It feels like a problem. Unfortunately, we won’t know for sure if it was a problem until all episodes are released. However, the uncertainty does feel worrisome, even as we go back and forth in having high hopes each episode.
