In one of Angus Cloud’s final movies, he plays a Fez-like character who ends up in a situation where you not only question if he may live but damn near everyone in the movie.

You Truly Don’t Know Who May Live Or Die

The way “Your Lucky Day” operates, truly, it is hard to say who could live. Will the shopkeeper, Amir, who wants to do right by his daughter, live? What about Ana, who is pregnant? Maybe her boyfriend, Abraham, who is as sweet as can be? Heck, Sterling might be robbing the place, but his actor is also the most familiar face of the whole cast, so surely he’ll live, even if he has to get shot at least once, right?

Daniel Brown doesn’t care about any of that. You might be pregnant, but bullets are flying, and that stomach makes you a bigger target. Who cares if you are Angus Cloud, on one of the biggest hits HBO has, and are a rising star? Drew Barrymore died early on in “Scream,” and she was huge at the time. Then, with Amir, yes, circumventing expectations and not killing the Brown shopkeeper could be done, but let’s not pretend he is morally upright.

Then, with the cops? They’re established to be crooked, some desperate for money, so do you think they wouldn’t kill some would-be innocents and come up with a story to justify their actions? Heck, maybe turn on each other?

It doesn’t matter how famous they are, how the industry is trying to shift away from repeating itself, or how controversial a kill might be – Brown wants to keep you guessing. Which he does up until the end, when you see someone still holding a gun and trying to figure out who is needed for an alibi. But even at that moment, you are questioning how many may survive or if anyone may survive over this lottery ticket?

On The Fence

You May Not Care Who Lives Or Dies, For You Don’t Learn Much Beyond Their Motivation

Here is the thing about putting characters in life-and-death situations – there should be an effort made so that you worry about who lives or dies vs. feeling like you should start a bet. For while we learn most of the characters want to lottery ticket to help support their family and kids, being that is everyone’s reason, and thus it is a generic one, it doesn’t leave you with warm and fuzzy feelings or being shocked or mad when someone gets shot.

All it does is trigger in your head hearing Queen sing “Another One Bites The Dust” as the numbers narrow, and you wonder who is going to survive, considering the training of the cops and how scrappy the people inside the Sip N’ Go are.

Who Is This For?

Those who enjoy the back and forth of people trying to negotiate for their lives, the rare twist when you realize someone didn’t die, and just overall wondering who is going to make it to the end.
