One Night Only may sell itself as a romantic comedy, but it struggles due to the situation of its male lead and the limits on sex in their version of American society.

Movie Summary

Thanks to the government, unmarried Americans are only allowed 12 hours in early August to have premarital sex for the last three years. There is no age exception; it doesn’t matter if you are living together, and it’s murky regarding what queer people can do as well. For even during that 12-hour period in August, you’re required to use a condom if you have sex.

Because of this, for those like Owen in a relationship, August 7th may as well be the second Valentine’s Day. All the advertisements, from Dunkin to Duolingo, make it seem so. But unfortunately, unexpected events for Owen lead him to encounter Allie.

Allie is a relationship type of girl, and if she isn’t notably enamored with a guy, it’s not happening. Leaving you to wonder, with Owen’s relationship in a very complicated place, and Allie known for looking for love in all the wrong places, will they both end up just as they started: unsatisfied, unhappy, and frustrated in more ways than one?

Review and Commentary

Highlight(s)

Gorgeous Vivian [83/100]

Throughout the film, Allie and Owen encounter many people they may sleep with. Some are famous, some appear to be rich, others are bartenders, or simply charming. Most of them end up just comical scenarios that you forget about, but Gorgeous Vivian is different.

While a small role, I would submit she is one of the most memorable of the entire film. It’s not just the accent, but the attitude, how she commands a room, and how she interacts with both Owen and Allie. She is the one who pushes the idea that maybe Allie and Owen aren’t endgame and Owen’s night is about to get a whole lot more complicated.

I would even say, as the film comes to an end, you may want to know what (or even who) came next for her, whether it was Owen or someone else.

On The Fence

The Back And Forth Does Diminish Your Investment In Allie and Owen [71/100]

Our biggest struggle with Allie and Owen is the back and forth between whether they may end up together or not. Bad enough that Owen is in this weird limbo with his girlfriend, which casts a huge cloud over the night. But Allie learns about her existence early on, and it’s hard to say if she gets the full story and whether she, a romantic, thinks that Owen’s version of events is believable.

This makes all the charm Callum Turner exudes quickly diminish and pushes you to want to see Owen and Allie support each other in getting what they want more than getting that from each other.

The Politics of The Mandate [73/100]

It’s hard to imagine, for three years, Americans being under a government that limits approximately 100 million+ people from having premarital sex. Never mind that all adults have biotech that can sense when you might be engaging in sex. It’s a good premise, and considering how the birth rate is dropping, paired with all the ideas to fix it which don’t involve gender equality, especially socially, it feels like the kind of policy someone might actually propose.

But the problem is, One Night Only is supposed to be a romantic comedy competing with such a scenario. So for every politician we see/hear, protest sign, or conversation, in New York City, it’s hard to not get swept up in all the questions you want to ask.  

From wondering who the president is to how a majority of Congress even agreed to implement this, it is all things you can’t help but wonder as Allie and Owen lose your interest. Add in that the movie also addresses the struggles cops have with enforcement? Especially for offenders who break the law by going against “The Mandate” or having premarital sex without condoms? It leads to a tone clash which doesn’t make for funny moments.

All The Sexual Content Feels Tame [72/100]

One Night Only is not a hot and steamy, raunchy even, romantic sex comedy. You may get some tame nudity in the form of covered breasts, male behinds, and people making out heavily, but you don’t get the sense that this is worthy of its comparisons to “The Purge.” It’s not graphic, the sex talk isn’t daring or provocative, and the film reminds you that it doesn’t take much to be Rated R.

But I would consider this another example of how the film sets itself up for disappointment.

Overall

Our Rating (74/100): Mixed (Divisive)

Our issue with One Night Only is that there is not only too much competing with the central “Will they or won’t they” romance, but also said romance constantly gives you reasons not to invest in it. Leaving the end result a bit unsatisfactory, and unfortunately, the best aspect of the film not being the political conversation, or inventive sex scenes, but a character who is maybe in the movie, at max, 15 minutes.
