While Give Me Back My Baby may have that familiar “Crazy women trying to destroy a marriage,” there was the potential for there to be something more there.

Movie Summary

Olivia nearly has it all. She is flourishing in her interior design career, married to a beautiful and assumingly successful man in Logan, and the only thing missing is a baby. She has a miscarriage, which is devastating, and learns that, for medical reasons, adoption or surrogacy are better options.

Neither are particularly liked, but surrogacy is chosen to have a child who looks like her and her husband. But finding the right surrogate seems impossible until Olivia’s college roommate, Morgan, pops up. She hasn’t been seen in years, but with Olivia and Morgan getting into a rhythm quickly, and Morgan offering to be a surrogate, Olivia takes to the idea of someone she knows carrying her baby.

But was that really the best idea?

Review and Commentary

Highlight(s)

Olivia’s Desire To Have It All [84/100]

It’s very easy, not only for men, but also for women, to live a checklist type of life. You get the degree, you get the job, you get married, have a kid, and there is this assumption that you’ll be happy. On top of that, because you’re a good person and you work hard, you will get everything you desire.

I appreciated the inability being shown from a woman’s point of view, especially regarding having a miscarriage. To note, Give Me Back My Baby doesn’t go into deep medical jargon and isn’t necessarily trying to raise awareness regarding how a person’s cervix plays a role in pregnancy.

However, what it does present is the idea of learning to pivot. You can have it all, it just may not be the way you envisioned it. To me, that was a surprisingly strong message, even amongst all the drama the film was more focused on.

Morgan’s Hate Wasn’t Justified But Understandable [83/100]

Morgan is a character whose archetype we’ve seen many times. She is the familiar face, quickly trusted, despite signs, signals, if not outright warnings, she shouldn’t be. Yet, she is so nice, so easy to be around, that the person who is the most vulnerable in the film takes to her, even as others raise red flags.

But the thing about Morgan is, like most characters similar to her, there is a reason for her madness.

Now, unfortunately, the film doesn’t get too deep into the why, but we do see the aftermath. This leads to a handful of actions that are a touch shocking. In particular, Olivia’s mom made it very clear she didn’t like Morgan, and the way Morgan clapped back at her made me think, “You about to get slapped so hard, what color you have, from your hair to your eyes, are about to go.”

Yet, then you realize, she dressed down Olivia’s mom so badly that she was stunned. To the point that it almost makes you wonder what Morgan would have been like without her trauma?

Low Point(s)

Logan’s Development Was Thin [66/100]

The biggest issue with Give Me Back My Baby is Logan. His character is underdeveloped, and it creates a liability because he is essential to both Morgan and Olivia’s stories.

With Olivia, it can feel like he checks out when the miscarriage happens, and he isn’t allowed to feel. He isn’t hurt, he isn’t numb, the way things are, it can sometimes feel like that experience was all happening to Olivia.

Then, with Morgan, it should be noted that Morgan, Olivia, and Logan were friends in college. But, for the most part, how that trio operated is not dove into. We know Morgan and Olivia were roommates, but Logan isn’t presented as the roommate’s boyfriend. It is presented that he had something unique with Morgan, but rather than dive into that, maybe add some nuance or details which could liven him up, maybe have it where you aren’t left with theories, you’re given a few short lines about their interactions.

Which was frustrating since there is so much potential for what could have been done there, especially as things begin to ramp up.

Overall

Our Rating (77/100): Mixed (Divisive)

Give My Back My Baby pushes towards having heightened emotions that aren’t strictly for entertaining drama. As it pursues showing a woman recovering from a miscarriage and another dealing with trauma they haven’t fully processed, it gives variety. However, while the overall story is good enough, it misses opportunities that could have made it better, more layered, and not leave its audience to fill in the gaps with assumptions.
