Movie Summary
Nia, Tanya, and Stacey work at a bar together. Nia does to make enough to eventually leave her abusive boyfriend, Tanya to pay the rent, and Stacey to pay for her dad’s medical expenses. None of them truly make enough for ends to meet, but they lack the time and energy to find something else.
So when a shootout leads to them discovering around $10,000, while some are hesitant, others jump on this like two men dying was a gift from God. However, not all money is good money, and the ladies soon learn that the cash they now have in hand is connected to a major revenge plot that damn near curses anyone who touches a single bill.

Review and Commentary
Highlight(s)
The Revenge Plot Which Causes The Main Conflict [84/100]
While the story focuses on Nia, Tanya, and Stacey, regarding the troubles going on in their personal life, the driver of the movie for most will likely be Detective Ethan Craig. His father was a cop, seemingly killed in action, and it appears a man named Victor, who is the son of the drug dealer who may have killed his father, is the one Ethan wants to get justice vicariously through.
As you’d expect from any cop with resources and a vendetta, things get messy when they get personal, and while the performances or story won’t get you emotional, they will keep you thoroughly entertained.
On The Fence
The Ease To Become Desensitized To The Ensemble’s Problems [78/100]
Broken Bonds is a film that answers the question: What if the majority of characters all had some kind of issue that we let the audience be aware of? Well, this leads to a double-edged sword. Yes, we appreciate that the leads have varied issues, from medical debt, domestic violence, and just plain old struggles of paying the rent. But, then you add on the chaos Ethan brings, which causes people trauma, then there are his own issues, and while all of this ups the entertainment factor, it muddies the depth of any specific issue.
Yes, Stacey’s dad needs a nurse, surgery, and all of this took her off the trajectory of becoming a doctor herself. But, how can you get invested in that when Nia has a boyfriend who begins as controlling, and doing the invisible form of domestic violence, like controlling her money, to escalating it where there is physical violence and attempts to control her movements? You can, you certainly can be as interested in Stacey’s storyline as much as Nia’s and everyone else’s. However, like a film that has a huge amount of violence, car chases, drug use, or sex, you eventually become numb to the struggles characters have.
Which is a shame since, I’d submit, everyone, on their own, has the type of issues you’d love to see fleshed out if Broken Bonds had a more singular focus. Heck, Victor and Ethan’s story could have worked as its own film, considering how Ethan is trying to avenge his dad and Victor is trying to step not only out of his father’s shadow, but the life he coerced him into.
Overall
Our Rating (81/100): Positive (Worth Seeing)
Broken Bonds is an enjoyable film that certainly competes with some we’ve seen in theaters. However, one of its main assets, in developing the majority of its characters and creating a notable ensemble, also becomes part of its central issue. For not all storylines are made equal, and when pushed together into one film, it can feel like a disservice to some, it casts a shadow on others, and it can show that a good idea didn’t get the time it needed to be a great execution.
Yet, even with that note, Broken Bonds is worth seeing, and with being free to watch on Tubi, that gives it a leg up on its competition for your time.
