Ain’t No Relationship Perfect: Angie, Smitty, Jake, Reg, Lynae, Bakari
Lynae’s fears of being alone, especially after hearing gunshots, may be fearing for her life, allowing Bakari back into her life – with conditions. Which comes as Jake tries to stand up against his brother, Reg, to get Bakari off his books. Thing is, Bakari has no other options, is making Reg money, and so Reg has no desire to send Bakari packing. And all things considered, with Roselyn backing him and him killing Nora on her behalf, Jake may want to watch it.
In less dramatic news, Angie reveals she is dating Smitty, and while warned he has a past that includes domestic violence, it seems with Hannibal away, and them having an open marriage, she isn’t against some danger.
Boys To Men: Devante, Mondo, Shaad, Patience, Jeremy, Emmett, Darnell, Kiesha

With catching Devante watching porn on his phone, two things happen. The first is Emmett giving Devante the sex talk he never had, and following that is Devante’s phone being taken. The original idea was just for a short while, but Kiesha convinces the group’s moms to take it indefinitely.
This gives Mondo a lot of time to prep for meeting Shaad. Now, like his dad, Jeremy, Mondo gives Shaad a hard time at first. But while Shaad is a stern kind of man with Jeremy, he is a little more shaky with Mondo. But, like father, like son, they both make it clear they were messing with him before giving him the benefit of the doubt. Thus lifting a weight off Patience’s heart.
Ending Things With A Bang: Victor, Tiff, Nuck, Kiesha, Emmett, Lynae
It finally happens, Emmett proposes to Kiesha, and as that happens, Tiff kills Nuck – with Victor right behind her. To elaborate, Lynae wanted to tell Tiff what Nuck did, give him the evidence via Zay’s confession. She wasn’t at the cigar lounge, but Victor was; he got sent the file and had Tiff hear it.
There was no discussion, no further investigation, just Nuck coming over, after seeing his son, thinking things are chill, and getting bullets to the dome.
New Characters in Episode 5
Jeremy (Felonious Munk)

- Character Summary: Jeremy is Mondo’s dad, who, based on Mondo’s back and forth with his friends, went to prison for something he didn’t do. It isn’t clear what, or if Patience knew him before, after, during, or if he might have been the inspiration for the work she does. Either way, he seems like a chill dude, serious about his son, and maybe his ex to a point.
Review and Commentary
Highlights
What Nuck’s Death Means For The Mob [85/100]
Nuck’s leadership held off the civil war expected when Douda died. Now, we have Reg working with or under Roselyn, Smitty, and others who surely may try to take over, and we may get the bloodshed that has thus been held off.
Is it the best way to end the series? That’s hard to say. But considering all the players involved and the chance for more betrayals, drama, and twists, it likely will have more oomph than any happy ending that is currently in motion. Including potentially ending with Kiesha and Emmett getting married.
Patience Getting More Screen Time [82/100]

I just love Patience. From the look to how she handles Shaad, her son, and Jeremy, I just want more of her, and even if it is a thin highlight, I will commit to noting how much I enjoy her episode after episode.
On The Fence
Angie Stepping Out On Hannibal [74/100]
Romance is such an afterthought on The Chi. Angie is stepping out on her man while he is in witness protection. I get it – she has needs, but it’s Hannibal. He is an OG on this show, and this feels like another example of the show pairing up characters, her and Smitty, because neither has something going on, and they want to keep a recognizable name like Kyla Pratt around.
Which, don’t get me wrong, I get everyone has SAG dues. But I feel like there is so much more Angie could be doing beyond acting as a buoy for another dull male character on this show.
Emmett and Kiesha’s Proposal [73/100]
My main issue isn’t that Emmett and Kiesha are in a relationship, but how that relationship diminishes both characters. Emmett has a business, a huge family, but everything is pretty much boiling down to Devante, Kiesha, and him getting pulled into the Nuck drama. None of these storylines are him at his best, especially compared to his sneaker hustling days.
Kiesha? She has been demoted to the girlfriend or the baby momma for so long, and the sad thing is, the show reminds you she has other things going on, off-screen. Her homeschooling Devante, working on a curriculum which can be expanded beyond him, really following up on that storyline from when she was an active teacher? That could give her something that establishes she has a whole life outside of taking care of Emmett, his family, and whichever kid is in her vicinity.
So when it comes to this proposal, it feels less romantic and more like paperwork. A means to reward Kiesha for putting up with Emmett and getting some guarantees if anything happens.
Overall
Our Overall Rating [78/100]
What I’m coming to realize more and more about The Chi, as we reflect on its existence, is that it knows how to handle the drama which is linked with tragedy to a T. Gangster nonsense, betrayal, violence, all of that it has down pat. But, the day-to-day stuff that exists outside of that? People going to work, school, building relationships, and being in healthy ones? It is treated as an obligation rather than the heart of the story.
Also, it seems to be a fallback. Something to keep characters around, have something to do, until they can be thrown back into the drama, which is the show’s bread and butter. So, while imbalanced, at least future episodes having the Mob back to a prominent position could lead to some much-needed energy towards the latter half of the season.
