Furious: Season 1 Episode 3 – Recap and Review

Episode 3 “Memory Distortion” Recap and Details

This case is leading to more reveals. For Alice, as Marshall joins what is now a joint initiative between the FBI and NYPD, we learn that a source of him being abusive was drinking. Also, that he still loves her and wants to be with her. Now, does she want to be with him? Well, based on the way she looks at him, panic attacks, and how his mom blames her for ruining her son’s career – NO!

But, if there is one thing that can’t be taken away from Alice, it is that she is a good investigator. Yes, she is paired with a man named Frank Choi who underestimates, undermines, and undervalues her to Nora. But Alice, sometimes because of Danny, other times on her own, shows her worth. This is especially true as she speaks with Mira and digs up information, or doesn’t go on a wild goose chase to find Catherine, and only ends up finding the real Jinny, as Frank did.

Now, speaking of Catherine, that is the real name of the person we’ve been referring to as “Jinny” due to no proper identifier. Which may lead you to wonder, how did this information get discovered? Well, a young girl named Elena, who might be a teen sex worker. To make matters worse, in Catherine’s eyes, this is the little sister of one of her closest friends when she was trafficked. She was supposed to look out for her but, due to her own struggles, couldn’t. So, here Elena is, seemingly with a pimp, trapped in a similar life her older sister was in.

Catherine does have a plan, though. She has some form of stability by pretending to be a nurse named Vanessa to this young man who is disabled and needs care. In his home, she has a room, can do some cam girl stuff on the side, and the guy is also who she gets her fentanyl from. Which may lead you to wonder, if she done or is there someone next?

A man named Blanchard is next, and from what Alice gathers and what we see, it seems Catherine is on the hunt for not just who hurt her in the past, but who may have been involved in the killing of Elena’s older sister, Isabel. Which, knowing she may need help, Catherine leaves Mira a clue to give police, so if maybe she doesn’t get the job done, they will.

Other Noteworthy Information

• Jealous Much?: Marshall believes Alice has a crush on Danny, and there are moments it seems like that might be true.
• Jay Easton: Part of the reason Jay may have shut down Alice when asking about Caleb is that, in the photo Catherine left, Jay and Caleb are shown partying with Catherine and Isabel.
• Mommy Wasn’t There: From what we’re told, Marshall’s mother raised Alice, hence why her flipping on her, regarding what she said Marshall did, was alarming for Alice.
• Connection: Caleb and Oliver went to law school together, and Caleb had dealings with Adrian
• Relationship History: Alice and Marshall dated around 10 years. Seemingly that is a combination between them dating in high school, breaking up, and then getting back together when they became cops.
• Date: It’s around November 10^th, 2026 and the show started around October 31^st.
• Becky is Dead: Becky is found dead in the park, after her rendezvous with Catherine. It isn’t clear if Catherine killed her or she overdosed – as it seems the FBI moves on pretty quickly from her death.

New Characters in Episode 3

Frank (Rob Yang)

• Character Summary: Frank is a FBI Agent who doesn’t take well to being paired with Alice, since she is rather green or because she is a woman – hard to tell yet if misogyny is involved.

Elena (Chloe Carrillo)

• Character Summary: Elena is the little sister of Isabel, one of Charlotte’s friends, who has been in and out of foster care, mainly due to running away. Currently, it seems she is beholden to a pimp, who she claims she loves, and this is worrisome for Catherine who knows Isabel didn’t want this life for Elena.

Becky (Chloe Troast)

• Character Summary: Becky worked at a homeless shelter which Catherine stayed at, while stealing Jinny’s identity. She is seduced by Catherine and forced to help her as she planned to get away with Oliver’s murder.

Marshall’s Mom (Constance Shulman)

• Character Summary: Marshall’s mom raised Alice after Alice’s mom abandoned her and in another life, they would have remained close.

Catherine’s Client (Steve Way)

• Character Summary: Catherine’s client of three years, who is the person from whom she gets fentanyl and is probably one of the closest people she has to a friend.

Review and Commentary

Highlights

Introducing: Catherine [85/100]

I won’t pretend as if Catherine is the most complex serial killer we’ve ever seen on screen. However, you do have to appreciate that, unlike a lot of depictions we see of serial killers, especially female ones, there is a reminder that not all killers operate on fear little and feel little. Catherine is notably social and uses the skills she unfortunately may have gained from coerced sex work to operate in the world.

Note, going by what we’ve seen thus far, she is capable of getting a regular job. On top of that, she understands the system, like the homeless shelter system, in order to not only find a place to stay when taking down a target, but also game people, like Becky. But, even in terms of the guy she is taking care of, we also see her capable of having relationships which seem mutually beneficial.

Is she taking advantage of him in terms of the drugs, getting a place to stay, likely some kind of income, and his crush on her meaning she can get away with a lot? Yes. But, beyond just giving him company, she seems capable enough to handle bathing him, giving him his shot to help him sleep, and being some semblance of a friend or companion to the point that it doesn’t feel purely about his crush. He genuinely enjoys being around her, and she seems to feel the same way.

With all that said, meeting Elena, learning about Isabel, and now having a motive makes it feel like we now have a stable foundation regarding who she is, what she wants, and what she is capable of to get what she desires.

The Push and Pull Of an Abusive Ex [86/100]

What I think is hard to fathom for anyone who hasn’t been in an abusive situation is the struggle of not only someone questioning “Why me?” but also wondering “Why did it happen?” For there is this general sense that you knew this person well enough to be vulnerable, feel safe, and during the good times, presume you were loved to the point that nothing extreme would ever happen.

This is why, when it comes to Alice, you can understand the push and pull. There is this push away from Marshall because he broke her trust, and being around him puts her body into this state where it is on high alert enough to get sick. But, at the same time, she grew up around him; there is nostalgia, a love for his mother, and a reminder that, when he wasn’t drinking, he was a good guy.

But Alice can’t forget; it isn’t clear if she is at a point where forgiveness is possible, and clearly she isn’t capable right now of moving on. Which is why her going into Marshall’s home to see his mom, and his mom going from sweet to visceral, was alarming. Then Marshall pressuring her to recant what she said so he can get a promotion, and him getting aggressive with her to the point of her needing to pull on her pistol.

It’s a lot, and it helps you understand why Alice keeps people, be it Danny, her sister, the majority of people she meets, at arm’s length. For as much as she wants to draw them closer, rely on them and more, disappointment for her hasn’t just been not showing up. It’s been something far worse, and once you know what one person is capable of, there is this idea that anyone could do the same.

On The Fence

Becky’s Death [72/100]

Becky was introduced in earlier episodes, but we didn’t take note of her because she wasn’t really notable. Yes, she presented the idea that Catherine is sexually flexible. However, her death doesn’t feel like a major loss.

It felt like her death was noted so that it ties up a loose end rather than have another witness out there you are waiting for Alice to discover. But, perhaps the biggest thing is, beyond knowing Becky had a girlfriend, we didn’t learn anything about her to get hooked onto. Add in that Catherine didn’t seem romantically interested in her, surely didn’t treat her as she does her client, and it made Becky ultimately feel like fodder, if not someone who could present the idea that Catherine is capable of hurting people, beyond those who hurt her as a child.

Our Overall Rating [81/100]

Furious remains one of the most engaging shows we’re watching this summer, and as it continues to develop its characters, it draws us in more and more. Which makes us quite happy this isn’t a binge-watch show for having a week to think about what happened and what may come next allows us to really enjoy the show rather than chew it up and spit it out like gum or tobacco.
