Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation: Season 3 Episode 7 – Recap and Review

Two characters seem to be leaving the show, but not due to dying! It is simply time to move on, and as they do, a major character’s introduction is being prepped.

Episode 7 “Phase Four” Recap and Details

Despite feeling like they just announced it was their final year, Liliana and Pursena are officially graduates. With that, they decide to have a duel for, with neither finding a worthy partner; they believe one should become Chief of the shared Doldia tribe and the other free to live their life. Ultimately, Pursena wins, and Liliana isn’t too mad about it – mainly because she has dreams of grandeur.

But, while celebrating their graduation, it is also celebrated that Nanahoshi, with everyone’s help, has completed phase three, in which she has summoned a watermelon from our world. Note: The aim was for a cabbage, but considering how there isn’t an equivalent to a watermelon, this is a much sweeter surprise and success.

Leading to preparation for the next phase, which will require Perugius, the Armored Dragon King, known as one of the three heroes who killed the Demon God and led humanity to victory over 400 years ago, during the Laplace War. Now, how does Nanahoshi know him? Hard to say. But she is able to get an audience with him and bring 12 people, so it seems everyone who hasn’t left will get to meet one of the greatest heroes humanity has known.

  • Norn Officially Joining The Student Council: Behind the scenes, for a year, Norn has been helping the student council with various things. But, with the recent graduations, it seems Ariel has decided to give Norn a promotion. Now, an official title isn’t relayed to viewers, but Norn seems excited and committed to continue working on her swordsmanship and clearing the names of the Superd race.

Highlights

Rudy Narrating Liliana and Pursena’s Fight [81/100]

Admittedly, focusing more on Rudy’s antics than the actual fight wasn’t the best call. However, him comically acting as an announcer, calling the fight, was one of the funniest things he did, which wasn’t internal dialog between him and the viewer. Now, did anyone else enjoy it? No. However, it does make you wonder if, in Rudy’s past life, did he enjoy watching people fight, and maybe that’s part of why he takes it rather seriously in his new life? Because he seemed notably entertained by all this.

Meeting A Legendary Character Soon [84/100]

Meeting Perugius, potentially in the next episode, is a major development. Thus far, everything has felt rather contained. Eris has been at the dojo, and Rudy barely left home for more than a day. Then, even if Rudy did, usually his wives were close by.

So this doesn’t feel like just another adventure that easily could be boiled down to an errand. This is a legendary figure that we’ve heard of, seen in glimpses, but now they can tell their story, speak for themselves, and the bonus is: They can not only help with Nanahoshi’s phase four, but maybe cure Zenith’s memory issues.

That detail feels major, because it leads to the question: What else can they do? Heck, how does Nanahoshi know them? It drums up a lot of excitement that has been rather absent as of late, since Rudy’s storyline has been far more focused on fortifying the relationships he has than building new ones.

Norn Seeking Rudy’s Approval [82/100]

To think that, a season ago, Norn hated Rudy’s guts and now she is seeking his approval to do something she doesn’t really need his approval for? That feels noteworthy. Not in a big ‘let’s cry together as fans’ type of way. More so, it really does push the idea that Rudy has, on-screen and off, put the work in to turn things around.

That he has earned the title of being a big brother, and now the father figure of the house. It isn’t just a title he inherited by blood or due to Paul’s death, but because it was bestowed on him. No different than when your friends’ kids call you uncle or aunty.

On The Fence

Should We Expect Eris To Do Random Check-Ins Every 6 or So Episodes? [77/100]

So, Eris reaches a notable rank within the hierarchy of sword mastery, and then she is going to disappear again? I get, these check-ins are meant to keep her name alive and give you incremental updates before she actually appears in Rudy’s current life. Never mind that, while Eris is a notable character, jumping back and forth between her and Rudy was always unlikely.

However, this is part of why her promotion didn’t feel as big as it should have been. She is a major character who started off the season, but now she makes random cameos. The kind that feels like social media updates where you miss most of the work but get to see the graduation photo, the offer letter, and things like that. But as for the journey to get there? You don’t get to be part of it.

And that leaves me wondering, what’s the next surprise we’ll get out of Eris? Her showing up at Rudy’s doorstep? Maybe her going adventuring and finding Ruijerd? Heck, considering what was going on with her family, maybe they’ll finally follow up on all the political turmoil since her grandfather was assassinated?

After multiple episodes which seemed focused on re-establishing who is who, and their relationship to Rudy, it seems we may actually be moving forward. We’re going to meet new characters; the adventure to Perugius home could be interesting, and it may not wrap up all in one episode, as all but Eris’ stories have thus far. Thus, it really gives us something concrete that could take multiple consecutive episodes to unravel, and not be a stop-and-go storyline like Eris becoming worthy to reunite with Rudy.
