Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation: Season 3 Episode 8 – Recap and Review

Sadly, meeting Perugius was uneventful. However, the episode does end with blood spilled.

Episode 8 “The Flying Fortress” Recap and Details

With the help of Almandi the Radiant and Sylvaril of the Void, Rudy, Sylphie, Elinalise, Cliff, NAnahoshi, Airel, Rudy’s cousin, and Zanoba are teleported to The Flying Fortress: Chaos Breaker. Unfortunately, due to being a demon, Roxy is left behind. But she honestly doesn’t miss much.

The fortress seems to be empty, sans Perugius and his 12 familiars, including Almandi and Sylvaril. Even some of the lower levels, which contain murals as interesting as they can be, go without explanation. Leaving Perugius the sole attraction.

As for whether he lives up to his legend? Yes and no. He certainly has presence, but despite the push that he is like the Great and Powerful Wizard of Oz and capable of granting wishes, that isn’t the case here. He cannot secure Ariel’s claim to the throne, though she would like his help to; he does not know what caused the Mass Teleportation event, but thinks it wasn’t man-made; he cannot cure Zenith’s memory loss, but does point Rudy towards Elinalise, who suffered a similar ailment; and Zanoba? He does have some information on who may have made the autonomous puppet, the Mad Dragon King, Kaos, but with Kaos dead, he can only show him past work.

But with Perugius pointing Rudy’s attention towards Elinalise, we learn that over 200 years ago she was in a similar situation to Zenith. She got trapped in a labyrinth, had her memory wiped and emotions drained to nothing, and seemingly was cursed while trapped there. Now, emotionally, she is normal, beyond her lust curse, but her memories have never returned. Leaving Rudy to wonder, as his mom gets better, will she too have been cursed with something uncurable?

It’s all hard to say, but when speaking of curses, it is hard not to think of Nanahoshi. Between being summoned to this world, with it being unknown how, despite her network and experiments, and a persistent cough, she isn’t doing well. Mentally, yes, she is stimulated, especially as Sylvaril hosts a beginner’s class in summoning. However, by the end of the day, she is no longer simply coughing, but spitting up blood, and she does so after Sylphie tries to detoxify her. Leaving her feeling immense guilt, for it looks like she killed Nanahoshi.

Other Noteworthy Information

  • What’s Left From The Previous Owner: There is a mural, featuring people who look similar to Sylvaril, in what looks like a dungeon within the flying fortress. The story isn’t explained, but it seems Perugius isn’t fond of it.
  • Man-God?: Upon going past an arch, Rudy and Sylphie light up, and this triggers Sylvaril to ask if either knows or has any reaction regarding the name “Man-God.” Sylphie says she doesn’t, and Rudy lies that the name doesn’t ring bells for him either.
  • Legendary Level Mana: Perugius makes it seem Rudy’s mana is akin to Laplace’s, and because of that, he doesn’t want Rudy using his mana in his fortress.

  • Character Summary: Spoken about since the first season, but now properly introduced, Perugius is a legendary hero who took part in the end of the Laplace War. In fact, in honor of his contribution, the calendar is named after him.

Sylvaril (Ayumi Tsunematsu)

  • Character Summary: Sylvaril is one of Perugius’ lead familiars, who finds themselves tasked with guiding Nanahoshi’s group to Perugius and teaching them about summoning spells.

Review and Commentary

On The Fence

The Fortress, And Those In It, Was Underwhelming [73/100]

Perugius, despite his appearance and legendary story, didn’t end up being the pop we wanted, or the show needed. Yes, he looks cool, his fortress does make you ask questions, as well as his 12 familiars with their intricate masks. But while things look interesting, you aren’t necessarily invited to learn more or even given a notable tease that more information is to come.

This trip, despite its build and how elaborate the transportation was, didn’t deliver in any meaningful way. At best, all it did was allow Sylphie and Rudy some form of alone time, which they haven’t had since Rudy’s family, and especially Roxy, came around.

A Taste Of Elinalise’s Backstory [74/100]

In a previous episode, Elinalise spoke about being run out of an Elf Village due to her curse. But what lands this in the on-the-fence section is that this was made to be a secret, one Perugius pushes Elinalise to tell Rudy, as if it may give answers regarding how Zenith could be helped. Yet, all it does is add a handful of details to Elinalise’s backstory, like her being married and what led up to her being forced out of the Elven village.

It was another storyline, albeit with less of a build, but still a notable disappointment.

What’s Wrong With Nanahoshi? [73.5/100]

Right now, the only long-term storyline that still has some potential for a payoff is the question of what’s up with Nanahoshi’s cough. Detox spells seemingly aren’t working; she ends the episode coughing and spitting up a lot of blood, and we’re left wondering if she might be okay.

On top of that, with Sylphie teasing Rudy about him being close to Nanahoshi, could it be that her magic may have done something? It shouldn’t be lost on us that Sylvaril didn’t just question Rudy’s connection to Man-God, but Sylphie’s as well, and considering there could be more to Perugius’ fortress than we know thus far, maybe mana operates differently there?

Unfortunately, we’re left with nothing but speculation, and it is also the type of cliffhanger seemingly meant to compensate for one flop or a reveal after another.

Our Overall Rating [73/100]

It’s difficult not to feel disappointed by how this episode turned out. We meet a legendary hero, and they don’t really say anything or do anything of note. We’re in this magnificent-looking fortress, but it is empty, and one of the few things worth noting, the mural, has no explanation or story attached. We do get some Elinalise backstory, but it’s a minor addition to a story already known, and it doesn’t add much for the show going forward.

Then, we get a cliffhanger, seemingly meant to compensate, which doesn’t reignite any excitement; it just pushes you to wonder when the next time we’ll get a moment that’s worth it? The foundation for the show has been reestablished and is ready to be built upon, so when is something meaningful going to be added?
