Episode 6 “Self-Loathing/ I Love You!” Storylines/ Recap

Subaru decides to apologize to Kaoruko regarding how she approached Rintaro, and Kaoruko puts down a reverse Uno, apologizing for causing trouble for Subaru. But, despite the apologies exchanged, Kaoruko seems firm on being with Rintaro, eventually. Subaru’s response? Well, recognizing her friend loves this man, she accepts it and takes note that there are things she has to work on.
Oddly enough, not too long after realizing that, Rintaro calls to talk to Subaru, and the two meet the following day, since Rintaro wants to figure out a way to not necessarily win Subaru’s approval, but figure out a way he and Kaoruko can continue and not get Kaoruko in trouble. The shared worry, and Rintaro thinking of Subaru regarding both meeting in their uniforms, touches her. Leading to her not only providing useful advice, in just the two not meeting anywhere near the school, but also asking if she and Rintaro could be friends one day – much to his shock.
Review and Commentary
Highlights

I love watching Rintaro win over Subaru to the point that she wants to be friends. It leaves me wondering if there is hope for the rest of the boys.
On The Fence
While I do appreciate the willingness to apologize and be “adult” and hold oneself accountable, I feel like the whole exchange between Kaoruko and Subaru was a tad longer than it needed to be. I loved how Subaru acknowledged that she was reliant on Kaoruko’s love to love herself, and she needed to learn to love herself more. I also appreciated Kaoruko speaking about how she liked and is growing to love Rintaro, but sometimes it felt like they kept circling the same thing and barely going deeper each time.
Overall
Our Overall Rating [79/100]
Sometimes the emotional maturity feels less realistic and more ideal and performative. Which could just be because it seems so foreign, but I do think that sometimes The Fragrant Flower Blooms With Dignity wishes to present how people should handle things to the point it is edutainment in a slightly corny way.
