My Status as an Assassin Obviously Exceeds the Hero’s: Season 1 Episode 1 – Recap and Review

An Isekai without a lead who is easy to attach to but at least it has a story intriguing enough to compensate.

Episode 1 “The Assassin Eats Bread” Storylines/ Recap

The King – My Status as an Assassin Obviously Exceeds the Hero’s Season 1 Episode 1 – Crunchyroll

Akira is a loner with an interest in Isekai, and by luck, depending on how you look at it, the King of Retice summons him, and his entire class to the world of Morrigan. While initially frightened, most of Akira’s class become quite excited once they learn they have powers and skills beyond the average person, with one even being dubbed a hero.

However, Akira is suspicious of it all, and with learning he has the powers of an assassin, he sneaks around to learn the truth until the Knight Commander, Saran Mithray, discovers him. Now, whether friend or foe is hard to say, but he shares Akira’s skepticism, takes advantage of Akira not necessarily being a loner by choice, and reveals to him that he plans to stage a coup.

But, whether or not the royal family is onto Saran, if Akira is being played, and what other secrets might be discovered, only future episodes may reveal.

To begin, the animation for Akira’s first fight scene definitely set an unexpected tone. It wasn’t brutally violent, but visually attractive enough to hook you, which made the time jump back okay, since you still had that high. But what is really going to make or break the show is how well it keeps up with the idea that the royal family is hiding something and even pushes the need to question whether or not Akira can trust anyone he comes across, never mind who tries to befriend him.

On The Fence

But while we do enjoy what action we saw, and the question of who can and cannot be trusted, I do feel, like a lot of Isekai, there was just a tidal wave of information about the new world, who is in it, and a lot of it didn’t stick. Yes, it is established that there is a human continent, beast, elf, and demon, but I wouldn’t say much was said or done to get you invested in the culture or lore.

Even the characters, while there is value in trying to guess the liar, the liars themselves aren’t that interesting. Akira’s classmates? When they first head to the dungeon and seemingly get set up, I was expecting half or more to be slain because that’s how unremarkable they come off. Like the majority are expendable.

Let me note, though, I can be for a large ensemble if it makes sense and they make the characters matter. So maybe this is just a case of needing to be patient, and let there be a foundation set, before writing off the cast as fodder for what is meant to be seen as shocking deaths.

Overall

Our Overall Rating [78/100]

My Status as an Assassin Obviously Exceeds the Hero’s is currently set up to be one of the rare shows where the story is far more interesting than the characters, which may not be a bad thing, as it seems backstabbing and politics could take this show far. However, with a huge cast, there is hope that between making most worth investing in, or at least one, something is done for Akira isn’t a terrible medium to the story, but he isn’t the most charismatic lead.
