Episode 3 “Pirate Ship and Girl” Recap (With Spoilers)
When it comes to Shiroha, Takahara can’t catch a break. He sees her at the reservoir, being odd, tries to join in, and it only makes things worse. He tries to buy her a melon bar later, but gets the wrong one, further upsetting her, but at least a girl named Kishima is a different kind of weird, which meshes well with Takahara.

In fact, her popping up is so perfect you’d think Umi sent her so that Takahara would do more than lay down under a fan all day, awaiting his aunt to eventually need him to do something. Together, Takahara hangs out with her, flirts a little bit, and he even finds himself confronting his issues. Now, he doesn’t get deep into them; it just seems like something with being in the water triggers him, but luckily, Kishima saves him from drowning, and they continue their day together.
It even leads to moments of you wondering if these two knew each other. Kishima recognized Takahara like they were old friends, and when she takes him to this secret treasure, there is a sense that it was supposed to trigger a memory. But as shown, Takahara is suppressing quite a bit, and it seems Kishima might have been collateral damage.

Overall
Our Overall Rating [84/100]
What is really making Takahara stand out right now is that he isn’t painted to be a basic guy, relatable to anyone, and the middle man to all these odd characters in his life. Takahara is firmly the lead whom you are supposed to invest in, and everyone else is in a supporting role. Yes, notable supporting roles, but I wouldn’t say you ever find yourself wanting to push Takahara out of the way to learn more about Shiroha, Kishima, or even Umi. You’re certainly invested in them, but Takahara is never put in a position to compete.

As we slowly get a sense that something happened at his old school, you also get a sense that while he struggles to move on, he wants to. He is given all the time in the world and a bit of a push from his aunt and cousin to put himself out there, and he is doing so. With Shiroha, he wants to be a friend, get to know her, and may stumble, but he keeps trying.
Then with Ao, and now Kishima, we see a bit of a flirty side to him. We see he isn’t the boring nice guy who just happens to find all these quirky girls in his orbit. He is actually making an effort to bond with them, play with them, and shows himself as someone flawed but likable. It’s something which feels very different from what we’re used to seeing, whether it is a slice-of-life show like this, or even an isekai.
