Episode 4 Recap (With Spoilers)

Despite theories, Ofuu doesn’t end up being the monster. She walks home with Jinya, gets there safely, and because Mosuke has become close to Jinya, he teases him about how cute they are. But, no sooner than Jinya leaves Ofuu and Mosuke returns to patrol, the demon strikes and kills a man, and luckily, Jinya is able to rescue the woman.

But, to some surprise, the woman is Natsu, Jinya’s cousin or adopted sister, depending on how you look at it, and luckily for Zenji, he wasn’t close enough to be the one the demon killed – but knowing he could have been freaks him out. Sadly, this reunion is short, but at the very least, Zenji gives a lead in the form of speaking of a demon living in a nearby abandoned temple.

Now, Mosuke, who tracked the demon while Jinya got reacquainted with his extended family, got the to temple first and paid with his life trying to save a woman who was being mauled and eaten. Jinya discovers him and we learn part of what is allowing Jinya to become more powerful is absorbing the strength of demons. However, it seems Mosuke is only the second “Awakened” demon he has taken in, hence why we’ve only seen the original demon’s powers thus far.

However, now with Mosuke’s invisibility, what was once a formidable foe is not that, but there is a tragic end to this story. This demon, which keeps talking about going home, that has killed men indiscriminately and mauled women, happens to be Mosuke’s wife, Hatsu. The trauma of being brutalized, not by demons, but by local men, gave birth to this demon, and now Jinya has slain her, and she joins her husband in the afterlife.

This isn’t the end, though, for Jinya. He was supposed to meet with Ofuu before leaving, but said he had unfinished business. With Hatsu’s demon form gone, this was confusing to Ofuu’s dad, but Jinya felt the need to avenge Hatsu, as he promised he would to Mosuke – which means killing her attackers, which he does, in quick fashion, for while human, they showed demonic antics, and Jinya made sure they wouldn’t continue to live, haunt, and hunt women in Fukugawa.

  • Character Summary: Hatsu is Mosuke’s wife, who was brutalized by some of the local men who liked to prey on women with beauty and a sense of innocence like she had. But, unbeknownst to them, in doing what they did, they gave birth to a serial killing demon. One which was the complete opposite of the woman Mosuke knew, who was kind, loved him, even with knowing he was a demon, and made him feel like the years, decades, he had left to live, truly would be in the type of peace he has longed for.

Overall

Our Overall Rating [79/100]

Admittedly, while there were initial fears about this show time jumping over a hundred years, I’m ready for it to move on. Mind you, not with a major time jump but certainly a change in location. Jinya still being in the area his father is, with that chapter closed, sort of bugs me, and when it comes to the closing of the serial killer case, it was by no means bad, but for the first multi-episode scenario for Jinya, it was average, at best.

But, on a positive note, I love the way that, even if the two-episode arc didn’t build out the world much, it did increase the understanding of Jinya and how he does and can operate. From his ability to laugh, interact with people in a personable way, take on massive demons, and get stronger, I felt like we may not have gotten something perfect, but the pursuit of perfection shouldn’t make getting something good seem like a consolation prize.
