In what could be, should be, the end of Umi’s arc, there is a promise to potentially move beyond Takahara and deeper into the past.

Storylines/ Recap

  • The summer ends with Umi slowly being forgotten, but with her being forgotten means the show finally moving on from repeating the same summer over and over.
  • We see Shiroha and Takahara get married, as well as learn Umi’s birth coincided with Shiroha’s death.
  • Leading to Umi explaining how she has long run from the sorrow of her mom’s fate and seemingly tried to make other stories where her mom lived as canon, but her parents seemingly always found each other.
  • Thus making it so, she plans to disappear far away from where she could influence the past in hopes that maybe this could keep her mom from dying in childbirth.

Review and Commentary

On The Fence

Getting To Move Ahead, Yet Still Stuck With Umi [74/100]

I have no desire to come off as an utter hater regarding Umi, but I feel like we’re past the point of no return regarding her potentially redeeming herself. Add in her disappearance, not having much of an emotional impact, and it makes me hope that, with her episode count hitting the average number given to an arc, we’re about to move on.

Heck, considering how she ends the episode with the idea that she is going even further into the past, I’m hoping all the questions that have been left unanswered so far, especially regarding Takahara’s grandma, aunt, and Shiroha’s parents, may finally be answered.

Overall

Our Overall Rating [74/100]

There is a hope, in what should be the final arc, considering the show has 26 episodes for this season, we may, once again, leave behind the tried and true formula, but this time get something far less disappointing.

Question(s) Left Unanswered & Predictions

  • Did Umi meant to say that she lived out, or watched, Takahara’s past arcs where he was getting close to girls beyond Shiroha?

Video Recap/ Review Text

  1. Intro Slide
  2. Recap: For the first time all season, Summer Pockets moves beyond the initial summer and heads to the future.
  3. Recap: Note, not so far we’re seeing Umi and Takahara at their lowest point as father/daughter, but rather the years leading up to Shiroha dying via childbirth.
  4. Recap: Meaning we see her and Takahara get married, learn Shiroha is pregnant, and see Shiroha, after a premonition, try to protect Umi from her ability to travel to the past.
  5. Recap: Alas, it didn’t work, but Umi seems undeterred and plans to figure out some way to protect her mom, maybe even at risk of her coming to exist.
  • Review: The struggle remains with becoming invested due to Umi not being the best medium.
  • Review: Now, it is nice that the show finally moved past one summer and started to explore the future, but it is rushed and lacks the emotional impact needed for Shiroha’s death to be devastating.
  • Review: Add in there is still this desire to know more about the lore of the island, the great families, and things like that, and it keeps Summer Pockets feeling like it is longer than it needs to be.
  • Review: Though with Umi promising to leave following her father around behind, maybe familiar names may become familiar faces in the final episodes?
  • Overall (74/100): While there are tears shed in Umi’s latest episode, our face is dry, and we remain ready to move on.
