Mandalorian Guns for Hire – Axe Woves, Koska Reeves
The episode opens with a Romeo and Juliet pairing with opposing parents soliciting the mercenary Mandalorians to return their love-smitten son to them. This is a wink and a nod to the change of pace to a much lighter whimsical, comedic, and farcical tone as Mando, Bo-Katan, and Grogu travel to the outer rim planet of Plazir-15 to recruit renegade mercenary Mandalorians previously under Bo-Katans command to return to the original fold.
There is not much in the way of other compelling storylines in Chapter 22. It is more so focused on showcasing a lighter, more fun side to staple characters and highlighting the star-studded guest appearances.
Robot Revolt – Mando, Grogu, Bo-Katan, Captain Bombardier, Duchess of Plazir-15
Fans are immediately treated to the incomparable comic genius of Jack Black as Captain Bombardier, husband to the Duchess of Plazir-15 played by popular artist Lizzo. The planet is resplendently beautiful in its modern landscape, and the costumes are bright and whimsically lavish in design. Our trio of Mando, Grogu, and Bo-Katan are even much more animated and humorous. Grogu immediately takes a liking to the Duchess (literally flipping over her) and hangs out with her and hubby, Captain Bombardier as Mando and Bo-Katan are on an enlisted mission to find malfunctioning droids and remedy a number of robot revolts.
Treachery at the Top – Mando, Grogu, Bo-Katan, Captain Bombardier, Duchess of Plazir-15, Commissioner Helgait
Mando and Bo-Katan, reminiscent of also red-headed Scully and Mulder of the “X Files,” are a detective duo as they search down clue after clue, with Mando hilariously yet expeditiously kicking robots to discover the ones malfunctioning while pragmatic Bo-Katan chides his approach. Their investigative measures lead them back to the previously questioned, now evidently guilty Commissioner Helgait, satirically well-played by a much-aged yet still-in-the-game Christopher Lloyd! They return to Captain Bombardier and the Duchess with prisoner Helgait in tow, where he is promptly exiled for his treasonous crimes. Mando and Bo-Katan are given a representative key to the city with an open welcome, and little Grogu is knighted! With the mission complete, the trio are free to return to their original objective of entreating the Mandolorian sect.
Reclaiming Her Throne – Mando, Grogu, Bo-Katan, Axe Woves, Koska Reeves
Bo-Katan is met with resistance by Axe Woves, who is now the leader of this renegade sect of Mandalorians and “liking it.” He is not giving over his command without a fight, as challenged by Bo-Katan. Mando and Grogu look on as the two fight with vigor, but ultimately Bo-Katan is the much more skilled fighter, and victory is at hand. Axe Woves still calls into question her ability to rule and reclaim the aspired throne without possessing the dark saber. In a surprising turn of events, Mando recants the events on Mandalore where Bo-Katan defeated his captors using the dark saber and therefore had won the right by defeat of those who had defeated Mando to possess the dark saber. He then awards the highly prized dark saber to the eagerly desirous Bo-Katan. Bo-Katan, with weapon in hand, now has no obstruction to the much-heralded throne she so desperately wanted to reclaim but had reluctantly given up to no hope as Mando owned the much-needed dark saber.
