Recap
It’s 1978, and Griselda, after ten years working with her husband Alberto, moving drugs from Medellin to New York, is in a tight spot. Over $500,000 was lost in previous shipments, and their careers are over. However, while without a job, they still have a debt, and Alberto has Griselda pimped out in order to clear it, and once she is done, she decides she is leaving Alberto.
Now, being that they have been together for over a decade, and he has helped raise her three kids, he didn’t want to let her go easily, so she had to kill him to be free. Within 24 hours after his murder, she is in Miami, living in a friend’s spare room with her three kids. The woman, Carmen, left her ex, who was also in the drug game and rebuilt her life, but while she gives Griselda a place to stay and a job, the job isn’t enough, and Griselda does have a kilo of cocaine on her.
So, Griselda begins shopping around, and no sooner does she secure a $20,000 deal, she is nearly killed in a shootout orchestrated by Amilcar, aka Rafo Rodriguez. Now, Griselda tried to make a deal with Amilcar previously, but he blew her off. But with her showing tenacity and him actually trying her coke this time, he is willing to give her one chance, and she doesn’t have any intention to blow it.

Episode 1: While Sofia Vergara Is Notable For Playing Against Type, She Has No One Notable To Play Off Of
There is no denying that seeing Vergara play someone whose accent isn’t being made fun of or where you question if you are laughing with her or at her is refreshing. However, while a talented actress, she also needs someone good to play off of, and “Griselda” doesn’t offer that in episode 1.
From Griselda’s ex-husband, friend Carmen, or the various men she interacts with to get a deal with Amilcar, or even Amilcar himself, no one has the type of chemistry with Vergara that you see she needs. Mind you, not desperately, but if she is the only notable hook of this show, while it will represent a turning point in her career, I can’t foresee it being the type that gets her the kind of acclaim that truly shows she isn’t bound to the comedy genre.

Summary
Trajectory: Mixed (Stick Around)
In many ways, “Griselda” feels like the dramatic shift many comedic actors take to change the direction or narrative of their careers, and Vergara excels. However, so much is put into her star power that, starting off, she eclipses everyone, and while Vergara has presence, she is an actor who does best with a quality scene partner, and one has yet to appear.
