Faiytales (2023) – Movie Review and Summary (with Spoilers)

“Fairytales” is an exception to what you usually get when you see a young person in that it isn’t a coming-of-age tale or a sterile children’s story, but what it is like to be a kid.

Lidia finds herself at a bible camp, and you can tell her interest in it are slim. Luckily, on her first day, Arantxa greets her and becomes her roommate. However, with Arantxa potentially being a little younger and Lidia using that to fill her head with fantasies, it makes it all the more harder to deal with Arantxa as she exerts that the fantasies Lidia concocted are real in a public setting.

Character Descriptions

Please Note: This character guide is not an exhaustive list of every cast member, and character descriptions may contain what can be considered spoilers.

Lidia

Lidia enjoys journaling and even fantasy. She sees herself as a fairy needing to escape, or at least tells Arantxa that.

Arantxa

If you ever want a sticker, Arantxa has you covered, just as much if you ever need a sidekick to a portal where faeries go from the human world to their world.

Review

Our Rating: Positive (Worth Seeing)

Highlights

The Friendship Between The Leads And How It Was Built On Trust

I remember reading Janet Mock’s “Redefining Realness” and her talking about how children build trust through games like “Truth or Dare” and thought about Lidia and Arantxa. Lidia, with being welcomed by Arantxa, tried to build some kind of world exclusive to them, and within one moment, she forced their world into reality and nearly destroyed everything.

Yet, as many an adult can tell you, a child’s trust can easily be broken, but if their experience with you is commonly good, they will forgive you and try to move on. Watching Lidia try to do that with Arantxa, after a public betrayal, pushes you to want to see the ebb and flow of their friendship since it is like watching the foundation of a relationship that usually precedes a time jump.
