Summary
When Sari was a child, she was cursed so that anyone she loved, even if the love wasn’t reciprocated, could disappear if she kissed them. By the time she became an adult she realized this curse was real and so she tried to live her life accepting she isn’t meant to be married, have a family, and all the things which come with that.
Enter Jolo, the grandson of the landlord that Sari rents her modest home from. When the landlord dies, Jolo inherits the place and with him having his own troubles with love, paired with being massively in debt, so comes the question if he will sell the apartment complex Sari, and many others, a lot of which are social outcasts, call home, maybe seek Sari to fall in love with him so he’ll disappear, or fall prey to the loan sharks who surely will create the worst case scenario for Sari and her community.
Cast and Character(s)

Sari (Kim Chiu)
As an adult, Sari works at the marriage license office, issuing certificates for others to be married, as she has given up on for herself. However, she has her guinea pig, her sister, and community to make her feel loved. This doesn’t replace the romantic love feelings she suppresses, but it is enough to make her feel fulfilled on good days.
Jolo (Paulo Avelino)
Between being left at the altar, a disappointment to his father, and massively in debt, Jolo isn’t in the best place. He even contemplates ending his life before Sari stops him and he inherits his grandmother’s apartment complex which offers him various opportunities. But with feeling betrayed by the one he loved, and in desperate need of a win, it is hard to say if he is willing to go to bat for a bunch of strangers when the drive to be selfish is strong.

Highlight(s)
Sari Is Likable As Is Jolo, In Time
While it has been a long time since we’ve seen a movie from the Philippines, one thing that has consistently been guaranteed in all their comedies is the leads being likable. Sari, being a beautiful woman who is cursed, but still kind and sweet, makes her surface level likable, but with “My Love Will Make You Disappear” never marketing itself as something that had any desire to be deep or anything like that, surface level characters are fine.
I would even extend this to Jolo who has trust issues due to his ex, money issues due to bad decisions, and has a bit of a chip on his shoulder when we first meet him. But, there is something about Sari melting his ice heart and winning him over, and him in return trying to win her love, that is rather cute and makes you hope that, ultimately, despite Jolo initially having ill-intentions, he ultimately will do the right thing.
On The Fence
If You’ve Seen Any Romantic Comedy Like This, There Isn’t A Lot Presented To Significantly Stand Out
I will give “My Love Will Make You Disappear” one thing – it is quite diverse in Sari’s community. It has a gay couple raising a daughter, a dark skin person (for a Filipino movie), and while the gay couple is quite flamboyant, generally speaking, they are presented as people just trying to make a life for themselves. Outside of that though, “My Love Will You Disappear” doesn’t do much, if anything, that is really noteworthy.
Yes, this is a bit more risque than I’m used to, with a lot of jokes about the size of Jolo’s penis from him being seen naked. Also, there is awkward moments he has with Sari early on, before there is a pursuit of romance. But, it still feels predictable, safe, and while characters might be likable, I wouldn’t say you get invested to the point of remembering much about them the longer you are separated from the movie.
Overall
Our Rating (78/100): Mixed (Divisive)
“My Love Will Make You Disappear” is a fell good movie that just wants to be fun, entertaining as you watch, and send you on your way. It doesn’t want to be put on a pedestal, create conversation, just be something you go see at the cinema, maybe because you have nothing to do, and that’s it. For those who like movies like that, this is a safe bet, but for those who may want more than a gimmick, a romance, comical villains, and a resolution that ends with things being perfect for the leads, this may not be for you.

It really is a shame A Rainy Day In New York will struggle to find distribution in the US. For while not Allen’s best work, it is still entertaining.
Movie Ending Spoilers
In the end, while it appeared Jolo was going to walk out on the people in Sari’s community, including her, that ends up not being the case. He ends up figuring out a way, through asking his pilot father for help, to save the apartment complex, and he even joins them in a battle against the loan sharks who started to harass Sari and her friends. He gets stabbed in the process, but he survives, and from what we see, he and Sari live happily ever after, and with their kiss, it seems the curse is broken, and all the people who disappeared due to Sari’s kiss come back, often with logical reasons for their disappearance.
