Review and Commentary
Highlight(s)
Clench Worth Violence [85/100]
Evil Dead Burn is gruesome. The injuries experienced by characters, whether they cause long-term suffering, death, cuts, or are just them being flung around, will make you grimace. Add in the special effects team really had some fun with showing you the aftermath of people harming themselves or others, and while I wouldn’t say it is so gruesome you can’t eat your popcorn while watching, you could accidentally choke when you clench up watching what happens.
Camera Tricks and Angles [84/100]
Like any good horror movie, it isn’t just about the special effects but how you present them. A character disappearing off-screen, only to be found on the ceiling. Focusing on one character while something happens in the background. There are a lot of camera tricks, notable cinematography, and excellent stunt performances, which made it so that if your main goal was to see notable gore, violence, and things of that nature, Evil Dead Burn delivered.
Low Point(s)
Investment In Characters Was Nil [64/100]
The sad thing about this movie is you can tell there was some desire to make Alice notable. She was in a bad marriage, the family was inconsistent in terms of how they felt about her, and yet, whether she lived or died, or anyone else for that matter, didn’t feel important.
They were simply the people something was being done to, there for your twisted entertainment, and whether they lived or died didn’t matter – it was all about how they died, and how far they would go to live. Which, for a horror movie, I feel isn’t a good thing. Surely you should become invested enough to want to see someone live to the end of the movie, maybe even get to star in a sequel.
On The Fence
Lore Was Weak [72/100]
I recognize Evil Dead Burn is a franchise, so not every movie may choose to catch up those who didn’t see the first or last movie. But I think there should still be something to make it so the film isn’t completely reliant on the brand and gives little to casual fans.
Note: there is an end-credit scene which ties to a previous movie. However, this movie doesn’t do much to really explain who this demon is. We know this family has a dagger which could defeat it. But beyond that, there isn’t much of a push for backstory, logic, or anything which could make this not feel like a generic demonic possession movie – minus a religious basis.
Which, again, pushes the idea that the selling point was clearly going to be the horror, the violence, and so, when it comes to the story and character development, that was secondary. Almost as if, similar to Sony’s licensing agreement regarding Spider-Man, an Evil Dead movie had to be made to keep the license, and whether it moves the franchise’s story forward at all doesn’t matter. Just as long as it had enough familiar elements to qualify as an Evil Dead movie.
Overall
Our Rating (76/100): Mixed (Divisive)
For those who just care about seeing mutilation, graphic fight scenes, and what often are one-sided fights, Evil Dead Burn gives you all you could want. But if you want to actually care about who is in those fights, why the fights are happening, and need some meaning, some sort of depth, and can’t simply do mindless violence? Evil Dead Burn might be a disappointment.
