Highlights

A Premise That Isn’t Done To Death

The concept of baiting your friend circle to see who likes your spouse isn’t a common or overdone theme. Heck, I can’t, offhand, even think of a movie or show they did this, so from the beginning, “Divorce Bait” starts off well. Now, yes, it is an idea born from Alexis’ insecurities based on being cheated on, but you get it. You have a lot of single friends, some who are very sexual, you know your husband has a healthy sexual appetite, and you want to test him.

Mind you, she does with him in on everything, just to really see if he can keep it in his pants. It’s all very ridiculous, but like anything that seems ridiculous, it is based on a potentially common thought. And like most comedy, it’s rooted in what people wouldn’t want to utter out loud but definitely have pondered. After all, how many times have you heard, in real life or in movies, “If I died, which of my friends would you go with?”

“Divorce Bait” just doesn’t wait for the death to happen to see which friend would attack like a vulture.

It’s Comical

“Divorce Bait” does the rounds by doing sex jokes galore and creating comical situations. For example, Alexis is a hand model, and their best friend, a flamboyant Black man simply named “Diva,” has vitiligo and names one hand Kanye and the one which is all white “Kim.” What you get here is range. So you can go from seeing Marco’s brother in a very strange BDSM pool party to Alexis accidentally taking edibles at a hand modeling shoot and having a bad trip.

Now, I won’t say you’ll laugh your ass off, but you will chuckle and roll your eyes with a smile on your face.

On The Fence

The Grand Gesture To Makeup Makes Very Little Sense

What is a romance movie without a grand gesture to apologize for a misunderstanding or screw-up? “Divorce Bait” has one of its own, and it may not make the most sense to you. It’s a very weird trust exercise/ showing that one side trusts the other, and while as ridiculous as the characters and situations in the movie, it might be when the film jumps the shark. Leaving you perfectly fine with the film ending minutes later for you got your fill.

Who Is This For?

Fans of silly indie comedies that focus on characters with notable personalities that are distinctive but not off-putting, that focus on not only making you laugh but presenting what can feel like a relatable issue. If not, giving you a chance to vicariously play through a scenario to understand why it’s not a good idea.
