Review and Commentary
Highlight(s)
Rooting For The “Villain” [80/100]
Being that Caleb and Julia’s families are insufferable, even the nicer members, it’s difficult to be against “The Wolf.” Add in that you know they screwed him over in some form or fashion, even if for “The Greater Good,” it is difficult not to think every bullet was well deserved.
And honestly, as you get to know Caleb, Jackson, Julia, their parents, grandparents, and siblings, it seems that if anyone gets to talk long enough, you grow to accept, even support, them being shot because they get that kind of reaction out of you. But, better to get some reaction, even if a negative one, and have someone like “The Wolf” provide relief, than having to suffer.
Low Point(s)
The Family Drama and Rivalry [66/100]
Being that Caleb and Julia come from big families, who are rivals in the business space, and present themselves as well off, even old money, it means peculiar personalities and dynamics. This ranges from soap opera storylines dealing with cheating, sibling jealousy, shady business practices, and more. But, even with one character, Phillip, with a certain flair about him, the way An Enemy Within operates doesn’t really take advantage of the drama to its benefit.
Yes, between the threats of “The Wolf” and people being exposed, it leads to energy levels rising and people saying or doing something which finally gives you reason to remember their name. But, no storyline or performance goes far enough for you to care who lives or dies.
For far too long in An Enemy Within, you are left waiting. You are left waiting to know who hired “The Wolf,” why Jackson is such an ass, and no one does anything, what all this family drama is about, and by the end of the movie, it is hard to say the answers were worth it.
They got you – you paid, and that’s why you sat through it, hoping to get your money’s worth. But, ultimately, you come to realize you should have waited for this to potentially come on a streaming platform.
Overall
Our Rating (73/100): Mixed (Divisive)
An Enemy Within isn’t absolutely terrible. However, it never reaches the potential it could. There is muted humor, the threat all characters are under doesn’t inspire you to care more about anyone, and honestly, there comes a point where you need characters to die just to stay a modicum of engaged.
Hence the mixed label. An Enemy Within is a slightly below average film that shows through its trailer and scenarios that it had potential. Unfortunately, though, awkward delivery, via the majority of performances, takes away from what could have been good, and leaves viewers with something forgettable.
