6 Underground Plot Summary/ Review

As noted in a recent episode of Patriot Act, billionaires are trying to work around, rather than with, governments to change the world. One billionaire, who simply is referred to as One, decides to change the world by forming and financing a group to take down men like Rovach Alimov. A dictator who ousted his brother Murat, who is pro-democracy, and rules over the country Turgistan using chemical weapons and fear.

This, naturally, puts him on One’s radar who decides to, alongside Two, a former CIA operative; Five, a doctor; Four, a man without fear, who often does surveillance and bounces around from pillar to pillar; Three, a hitman; and Seven, an American war veteran, cause a coupe d’etat. A mission complicated by Murat’s fear, Seven not appreciating One’s willingness to leave people behind, and a billionaire with limited tactical experience leading a small group to change the destiny of a country.

Highlights

It Provides You Enough Information About Everyone To Care About Them

When it comes to Billy, Javier, Camille, Amelia, Blaine, and One, we learn just enough about them to care, and thankfully, each actor has enough charisma not to be put into Reynolds’ shadow. Not to the point you can say they are at the level where they could be the star driving the film, but they bring enough so that if they aren’t sharing a scene with him, you aren’t looking at your watch.

The Action Is Shocking

While it isn’t like Michael Bay hasn’t done a rated R film before, taking note you will see heads blown off, people mutilated, and innocent people killed, there is a bit of shock how far this goes. I’d even say this would be Bay showing himself fully unleashed when he doesn’t have to worry about whether theater chains would think his work is too violent and he is allowed to, between him and the writers, go all out and have a wild time.

The Story Is More Than Just Something To Justify The Action

With hints of Syrian president Bashar al-Assad, Rovach presents to us a simplified version of those who rule with an iron fist and fear, as America, Russian, and other countries sit back and let people suffer as they profit, by one means or another. Making the film a bit more political than you expect, but never taking away from the fact this is an action film and Bay knows, when you see his name, you aren’t seeking something overly complex but explosions, bullets flying, and jokes.

The Comedy

Ryan Reynolds in 6 Underground is pretty much Ryan Reynolds in most of his recent films, but specifically Deadpool. For whether it is pop culture references, dry humor, which his co-stars share, or just comical slowdown sequences, the film almost makes you wonder why Bay hasn’t had more work in the superhero genre considering what is done with 6 Underground.

Overall

Met Expectations

It met expectations in terms of comedy, explosions, and violence. In terms of story, being that usually the writing of Bay’s films is consistently trounced, I must admit I wasn’t expecting much. However, it’s light political commentary, and building up the characters enough to care about them was a pleasant surprise.

Would Watch Again?

While a one and done film, it does do good enough to make you want a sequel.

6 Underground Rating: Positive (Worth Seeing)

For fans of the action genre, who don’t necessarily need too much in the way of depth, this film is for you. Between the level of violence, Billy/Four’s thrilling jumps and leaps, and an early on death which puts you on edge, Bay continues to be an icon of the action genre, and Ryan Reynolds one of the top comedic actors who have never done stand up.

6 Underground Ending Explained, Recapped and Spoiled

The goal of the mission was a regime change. Mind you, for One’s team, it would be their first major mission, and just in what could be considered “The Warm Up,” they lost six. Someone who wasn’t given a funeral, or anything noteworthy, thus really setting the tone for how One operates. However, between Javier visiting his mother,  despite all members faking their deaths and vowing to cut off personal ties, and Blaine deciding to bring his military background of family into the dynamic, things change.

Making it so, as Javier and Camille become a couple, and possibly Billy and Amelia, a family begins to form, and while tech billionaire One still keeps a moderate distance, the change affects him too. Hence why, on the hunt for Rovach, he decides to allow time to be set aside to save Billy twice.

Thus allowing, in the end, only Six dying in pursuit of installing Murat, which is done successfully. As for Rovach? Well, rather than possibly exposing themselves by bringing him somewhere to face his war crimes, he is dropped off to be beaten to death by the rebels. Leaving everyone the opportunity to have some peace before the next mission, including One who learns a fling he had might have produced him a son.

Is A Sequel Possible?

The target hitboard featuring multiple people covered by paper.

Considering 28 minutes in One mentions there are nine targets he has in mind, and we only see Rovach handled, technically this could go for 9 movies.
