Terminology

  • Sentinel (S1E1): Sentinels in Kadone Village are the lead protectors who are expected to not only protect the Itsukihime but also the village from demonic presence
  • Itsukihime (S1E1): A princess or priestess, the Itsukihime is a sacred figure in Kadone Village. She is often ostracized from the public and meets only with the chieftain, her sentinel, and a handful of selected advisors.
  • Advent of Death (S1E1): The nickname the foresight demon gives Suzune
  • Superior Demons (S1E3): Superior demons are classified as having awakened abilities – like Mosuke, in S1E3 who, while over 100 years old, and notably weak, he is considered a superior demon due to having the ability to turn invisible

Storylines

Season 1 Storyline(s)

Grand Betrayal

Suzune, after learning that her childhood friend, pseudo-big brother, Jinta, would not end up with his nearly lifelong crush, Shirayuki, goes berserk and kills her in a fit of rage. It is revealed when Jinta discovers this that Suzune had romantic feelings for Jinta, which were suppressed because she saw him happy. However, a rift comes between them thanks to this murder, and feeling disowned, Suzune vows destruction, of which Jinta’s life will be the last thing she destroys.

The Pursuit Of Power

Jinya, preparing for his eventual meeting with Suzune, takes on demons to test his and his sword’s power and absorb their awakened abilities.

Noteworthy Information

  • Time Jumps (S1E1): 1830 to 1833 to 1970
    • Time Jump (S1E2): We go to 1850
    • Time Jump (S1E3): We go to 1853
    • Time Jump (S1E8): We go to 1854
    • Time Jump (S1E9): The episode ends in 2009
    • Split Time (S1E10): Harlot In The Rain splits time between 1855 and 2009
    • Time Jump (S1E14): We go backwards to 1839 then to 1862
  • Demon Lifespan (S1E1): Demons can, allegedly, live over 1000 years, and if they have the liver of a Miko, they can potentially be immortal
  • Demon Death (S1E2): If you see a white smoke or mist after a demon dies, it has permanently died. However, if there is a black mist or smoke, it will be back.
  • Demon Origins (S1E2): Demons are born via two demons, one human and one demon, and can be born through the sheer power of emotions, particularly strong, negative emotions.
  • Masking (S1E3): Demons have the ability to present themselves as human or in their demonic form at will
  • Other Notable Exorcists/Demon Hunters (S1E9): Nagumo of the Cursed Sword and Kukami of the Magatama
  • Akitsu Techniques (S1E9): Can be inherited by blood or through schooling

Suzune (Reina Ueda)

    • Character Summary: Suzune is Jinta’s little sister, likely by bond than by blood, who is a demon. However, to hide her identity, she would cover her demon eye, which is red, and suppressed her powers and demon nature to stay the size of a child. However, after a major incident, she rapidly grows up, her powers get unleashed, and her demon nature no longer becomes something she suppresses to continue living with Jinta.

    • Character Summary: Jinta is a young man who has long to become more powerful, more agile, and more dependable, even when he was looked up to and thought of to be all those things. But, with having to take care of Suzune as a older brother, he worked on being brave, with taking on Shirayuki as an additional little sister, later on love interest, he had to be stronger and a leader, and as a sentinel for the Kadona village, it seemed he reached his goal.

    However, a battle with a demon changed Jinta and Suzune assuming her brother was betrayed changed nearly all of his relationships.

    Shirayuki (Saori Hayami)

    • Character Summary: Born and raised in Kadone, the daughter of the Itsukihime and sentinel, Shirayuki, upon being met, was a bit lonely because her father often had to go out to face demons on the outside of town and because of the rules of the village, Shirayuki couldn’t spend time with her mom. This made Suzune and Jinta a God-send as siblings, friends, and Jinta a eventual crush.

    However, as time went on and things happened, Shirayuki assumed her mom’s role as Itsukhime and Kadone was never the same.

    • Character Summary: Motoharu is Shirayuki’s father who was the sentinel of Kadone. He also became the adoptive father of Suzune and Jinta after discovering them, after Jinta ran away from his father for striking Suzune.

    • Character Summary: Kiyomasa is the son of the chieftain of Kadone, who is made into a co-sentinel with Jinta due to his crush on Shirayuki, who his father arranges to marry Kiyomasa.

    Kyuuzou (Masaki Aizawa)

    • Character Summary: Kyuuzou is Jinta, now Jinya’s father, with whom he didn’t have the best relationship because of how his dad treated Suzune. But, in Kyuuzou’s defense, there might be legitimate gripes between Kyuuzou and Suzune that Jinya isn’t aware of.

    • Character Summary: Natsu is Kyuuzou’s adopted daughter, a distant relative, whose parents died. She is 13 years of age and despite Kyuuzou’s past parenting history, it seems he treats Natsu far better, even if he isn’t the most expressive father.

    • Character Summary: Zenji is one of Kyuuzou’s employees, who has a close relationship with Natsu and counterbalances how stern and stoic Kyuuzou is with his charisma.

    • Character Summary: Ofuu is a waitress at her father’s restaurant and someone whom Jinya doesn’t have a romantic interest in, so it appears, but does take note of. But, later on, as Jinya looks into Sadanaga’s case, he comes to learn Ofuu is a demon, potentially a superior one, who has the power or found a place where time has relatively stopped, beyond the loop she made of her parents, who died in the Great Fire of Meireki, over 200 years ago.

    Sadanaga (Yōji Ueda)

    • Character Summary: Sadanaga is Ofuu’s adoptive father and formerly the eldest son of the Miuri family. However, he gave that all up for Ofuu, while she was in “The Garden of Happiness” and over 30 days, he aged 20 years, to the point he is unrecognizable to his own brother. So, rather than try to reclaim his old life, he took over a small shop and tries to make a living cooking for people – even if those like Jinya say his food is average, at best.

    • Character Summary: Mosuke is a demon, a “Superior Demon” strictly due to age and having his powers awakened. But, despite having invisibility powers, Mosuke doesn’t see himself as that powerful, and honestly, he doesn’t want to be. He just wants to live a simple life, and when he got married, he was the happiest you could imagine.

    • Character Summary: Hatsu is Mosuke’s wife, who was brutalized by some of the local men who liked to prey on women with beauty and a sense of innocence like she had. But, unbeknownst to them, in doing what they did, they gave birth to a serial killing demon. One which was the complete opposite of the woman Mosuke knew, who was kind, loved him, even with knowing he was a demon, and made him feel like the years, decades, he had left to live, truly would be in the type of peace he has longed for.

    Naotsugu Miura (Seiichiro Yamashita)

    • Character Summary: The heir to the Miura’s family legacy, Naotsugu is a samurai, a civil administrator for the shogunate, known for being far kinder and more approachable than most. However, between his obsession with swords and a long-lost older brother he speaks of, he is seen as a bit peculiar, but still far kinder than most in his position.

    Doshu Saga (Setsujo Sato)

    • Character Summary: Doshu Saga is a local artist, one of moderate notoriety, who knew Motogaru during his early days as a Sentinel, and crafted a commissioned piece for him. The piece, “The Ukiyo-e of Kudanzaka” was modeled after Shirayuki’s mom, and was named Kudanzaka because Motoharu thought she was more beautiful, eventually, than a local goddess.

    Harlot (Nabatame Hitomi)

    • Character Summary: Harlot is a local sex worker who helps Jinya get work and warns him of Akitsu’s presence.
    • Real Name (1.15): Might by Kinu – as Miura references the woman in his life as Kinu

    Somegoro Akitsu III (Koji Yusa)

    • Character Summary: Initially, Akitsu presents himself as a merchant, using the name of a dead, but legendary merchant known for their metal craftsmanship. However, Akitsu is actually their descendant and uses being a merchant as a cover for being a demon hunter. One who, through being a spiritual medium, uses shikigami/tsukimonogami in order to both defend himself and go on the offense.

    Miyaka (Yang Gongfeina)
