Episode 2 “The Demon’s Daughter” Recap (With Spoilers)
The Rude Child: Kyuuzou, Jinya, Natsu, Zenji
When we’re reintroduced to Jinya, it has been a little less than 20 years since Suzune and he parted on bad terms, and it seems Jinya has gained a reputation as a traveling demon slayer. Because of this, Kyuuzou, a general store owner, hires him to assist with a demon haunting his adopted daughter, Natsu. This little girl, not even 13 yet, is opinionated, rambunctious, and also a daddy’s girl.
However, with Kyuuzou being so stern, Natsu takes to Kyuuzou’s assistant, Zenji, quite well. She enjoys this balance, which is why Jinya, when he comes into the equation and disrupts her routine, isn’t taken well at all.
The Longing Demon: Jinya, Natsu, Zenji
But Kyuuzou didn’t hire Jinya for nothing. A giant blob of a demon, which can only say one sentence regarding getting their daughter back, haunts Natsu nightly. Although the demon is no match for Jinya, it does seem capable of harming Natsu, never mind Zenji. But with a few whisks of his blade, Jinya defeats the demon over and over, until it becomes clear this demon isn’t normal.
This entity wasn’t born of two demons, or even one, but of negative emotions, and originally, Jinya believes Natsu’s insecurities about being adopted, a replacement for Kyuuzou’s son, that is why this entity exists, but it goes beyond that. This demon also has a personal connection to Jinya.
The Never Forgotten Child: Kyuuzou, Jinya, Natsu, Zenji
You see, Jinya is Kyuuzou’s son, and from what it seems, Suzune may have been involved in Kyuuzou’s wife’s dying. Hence, the demon isn’t just Natsu’s feelings, but also Kyuuzou’s. However, despite this reunion, neither Jinya nor Kyuuzou speaks to each other in a manner that suggests they are father and son. They just make it clear to Natsu and Zenji as Jinya departs.
Leaving us to wonder what Suzune’s full story is, given this recent revelation.

Review and Commentary
Highlights
The Possibility Of Jumping Around Jinya, And Maybe Suzune’s, Past [88/100]
It wasn’t clear at the end of the first episode where “Sword Of The Demon Hunter” was going. With seemingly skipping 100+ years, going to a completely different version of Japan, there was the wonder if what could be presented would maintain the initial love and interest the first episode fostered. Thankfully, from what it seems, while the first episode wanted to firmly establish what led to Jinya’s journey, it seems episodes beyond the first are covering what he did on the journey until he inevitable comes face to face with Suzune again.
Now, what may happen when that day comes, never mind what interactions Jinya may have up until then? That’s hard to say, but if this is an example, I can only hope we don’t just see his point of view but Suzune’s as well.
Jinya Visiting His Father, Or Making Himself Available To Him [85/100]
To start off things with Jinya visiting his father, the person who was one of the first to betray him was a bold move. Mainly since, it was unexpected and felt like something that would be held until later in the season. After all, Jinya got set on this path because of what his father did to Suzune, and he can even be considered a contributor to what led Suzune to snap.
Yet, there is this strange beauty in Jinya coming back to his father’s home, decades later, and appreciating him trying to be a father to Natsu that he couldn’t be to Suzume, and maybe him in extension. Never mind, having no jealousy or ill will towards Natsu, or even trying to humble her by making it clear of his position. It really creates an excitement in me for to start off this strong in two episodes makes for the question of how they may up this or maintain in a third, fourth, and beyond!
Overall
Our Overall Rating [86/100]
Usually, rating something this high requires tears or some other strong emotional reaction, but ultimately what I found was enjoyment. I had hesitation starting this episode that was unfounded, I was given something beyond expectations, and I find myself leaving the realm of hoping for the best and expectating the worst and believing I can just sit and enjoy “Sword of the Demon Hunter” rather than wait for the shoe to drop.
